Red Light Cameras in Suffolk.
Red Light Cameras Debut in Suffolk By Long Island Press on Jun 19th, 2010
Watch out Suffolk County drivers: red light cameras are coming to an intersection near you. Suffolk County officials announced Friday that the first in a series of photo-enforcement systems that capture red light violations is operational at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and the Long Island Expressway South Service Road near Exit 59. There will be a 30-day grace period will let violators off with warnings through July 15, when fines will start. Cameras will be installed at up to 50 intersections Suffolk County and New York State road intersections starting in August. The program established by legislation passed in 2009 and is designed to reduce crashes caused by drivers running a red light or failing to make a full stop before making an allowable right-on-red turn. Violations carry a $50 fine for the owner of the vehicle, with no points assigned and no insurance implications. Fines will be deposited into the county’s road fund as revenue to offset taxes. Cameras will capture an 8-second video of the violation along with two photos that identify date, time, vehicle speed, license plate and time the light has been red After the violations are reviewed by technicians, a citation is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. Included in the citation will be a specialized web address and PIN number where the violator can view the infraction and make an on-line payment. Payments can also be made by phone to a major credit card or by mail. The county also has a general informational website on the program at: www.suffolkcountyny.gov/redlight Recommend this? [?]

Re: Red Light Cameras in Suffolk.
Did they ever come out with a list of intersections for this? I'd laugh at all the idiot drivers in Mastic/Shirley if one of the intersections is William Floyd and Montauk.

Agreed! That is a TERRIBLE intersection.
But I do support this. There is no reason to run a red light, that's what the yellow one is for!

Re: Red Light Cameras in Suffolk.
I wish we could put in suggerstions for some lights! There is one by my house (not a busy courner) that takes some time to change. Some people get so impatient waiting and go right through it.

Now that I think about it, I wish they would do it at stop signs too! There is one close to my house that nobody stops for!
