Reflux and Congestion--our doc appointment
For those of you who were interested in how our visit with the gastroenterologist went about the connection between DSs reflux and constant congestion and coughing, here it is:
Doc said the likelihood that the two are related is very slim. He said there really is no proven correlation between the two. He did say that children asmtha or upper respiratory disease or other respiratory problems can also have reflux, but that reflux really has no effect on the respiratory system. He suggested that the prediatrician look at asmtha, upper respiratory disease and allergies.
This was a specialist at the Good Sumaritan pediatric facility on Deer Park ave. He seemed really confident. I find this interesting because I think someone had responded to my previous post saying that their doctor said that children with reflux are often congested....I dunno, so back to square one I guess. I do have a dog and cat, so I guess the next step is to push for some kind of allergy testing, though they didn't want to do it...

I believe that children with reflux are more prone to ear infections. If your DC is having a lot of congestion my thought would be allergies - Especially if you have a pet in thouse. Ask your ped to refer an allergist to get tested.

Even thought this wasn't part of our discussion because DS has never had an ear infection, the doc did mention that there is alos no proven correlation between ear infections and reflux. I'm going to ask about the allergist, thanks!

That's interesting... Our ENT asked if our DD had reflux because of the number of ear infections she had. I guess he would know though - he's the gastro.
Good luck!
