Re: reflux baby

I'm sure you've heard this, but keep him upright after feeding. My DS was diagnosed with it as well and I have to say the zantac has helped. Good luck. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: reflux baby

Dd had it and the zantac helped a lot. Keep baby upright, feed slowly in small amounts. Good luck!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: reflux baby

Well we started DD on Axid but after a few weeks and once DD hit 3 & 1/2 months it got really bad my ped. told me to start her on cereal 1 tsp for every 2oz.
What finally worked was 1 tsp for every ounce & Zantac. It takes a few days for the meds to kick in. I've heard as much of 10 days.

I'm sure your ped. will not have you start cereal this early and it's controversial before 6 months but it works for us.

She still spits up but not as much and rarely gets reflux.

Holding her upright for at least 20 minutes after eating also helped a bit.

Good Luck Chat Icon It gets better & if Zantac isnt working ask to change it.

Re: reflux baby

DS has reflux and is on zantac and the dr. told me to put rice in his formula, to make it the consistency of honey.

Re: reflux baby

For our DS, besides the things already posted, we ALWAYS had him sleeping in his motion glider so he was a bit upright. The first two weeks of his life in the NICU were spent on a slant and when we got home he did not adjust at all to going flat. Having him sit up a little as he slept helped him sleep a lot better.
Hope your little one feels better soon, nothing worse than seeing them in discomfort/pain.

Re: reflux baby

The Zantac will help! Jacob had the same thing and he was also on Zantac. It worked pretty quickly once he started on it. We also propped up his crib slightly. Chat Icon

Re: reflux baby

DD had bad reflux - she took zantac - she would have some flares but the zantac protects their esophagus from damage.

DD's got worse at about 5 months or so then suddenly disappeared all together. But before that time she had days she would cry for several hours at a stretch.

Try sitting him up for a while after every meal - sitting up helps with the reflux and the spitting up. You can also get a carrier and try carrying him around the house - that would always help DD.

This really helped us - we always keep DS upright for 30 minutes b/f putting him down. Any sooner sometimes he will be worse.

ETA: Also, he would only sleep on the positioner with the incline - first in his bassinett and now in his crib. The incline def. helped.

We tried Zantac but it actually made DS so much worse - so this can happen and be on the look out.

I know this stinks- but it will pass Chat Icon

Re: reflux baby

first of all welcome and Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon to you. i feel your pain - DD was finally diagnosed at about 7 weeks too and it killed me to see her so unhappy. I feel like i've aged 10 years since she's been born.

It does get better with time. Keep DC upright for at least 20-30 mins after eating. Keep head elevated in bassinet or crib for sleeping (wedge). The zantac should help with the discomfort. Every baby is different but you may need to change formula or if you're breastfeeding, you may need to pump in bottle and add rice cereal. Your doc willl instruct you. Good luck and feel free to FM me if you have any other questions. We also see a GI pediatric specialist for DD - she is almost 5 months now.

DD reflux was pretty bad so she started with zantac only but the GI doc added prevacid which seems to help her more than the zantac. They say to give it the med at least 1 week to adjust.

Oh and our doc also said DD's infant/car seat carrier is not ideal for her reflux because of the leg position pushes up her diaghram so we only keep her in that in the car. At home she's most comfortable in the bouncer and/or swing (because her legs are able to stretch out better).

Re: reflux baby

My Dr. Advised me to start her on cereal at 4 months. TBH I would stick w/ the meds. I'd wait to use cereal as your last resort.
I actually should have just changed her meds and see if that alone worked first.

Re: reflux baby

Zantac worked wonders for us.
We didn't have to put rice in his bottle either!

Just be aware that as your DC gets bigger you might have to increase the dosage!

Re: reflux baby

Thanks for all the suggestions & help. He was a bit better today during the day, but was absolutely terrible tonight! I was just about to take him for a car ride to calm him, but after screaming for a while i guess he knocked himself out & is now sleeping in the car seat. Im having such a hard time sleeping because Im so worried about him spitting up & choking or even just being prepared for his next feeding. This is really doing a number on me!
