Releasing 9/11 911 calls

I think they are part of the public record but some people feel strongly that they shouldn't be released. Your thoughts?

Ditto....It would be so hard for a widower to hear her husband's frantic call in the news or something like that.

Re: Releasing 9/11 911 calls

I don't get why they need to be released to the public...
The families-- I definitely understand.

But what is the public to learn from hearing them?

I think it shows how the police, city officials, etc responded to a crisis. I think it is important for crisis management analysis.

Re: Releasing 9/11 911 calls

You have to.
All 911 calls are public information. If you start making some calls not public...will it is imho that you are walking a slippery slope.

I think they're part of public record - as are every other 911 call. They should be treated no different - personally identifiable information can be edited out.

i agree. i really think that the victims need to rest. people will argue that you dont want to forget them - but honestly i know i never will. i think a lot of us will forever remember that day so vividly, remember the fear, the sadness, and the helplessness.
i think part of the greiving process is moving on. that day will forever play in my heart - i really dont want to hear the desperation of those poor victims on the 5 o'clock news...IMO

Gotcha. Thanks. Absolutely makes sense.

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of them releasing them for the drama aspect.

Me too. I understand why they've been released, but I've had to change channels. It's still awfully raw.
