Re: relying on the pacifier...honest opinions needed
DS is 16 months. We have use dit since day one.
At about 11 months, we cold turkey took it away for day time.
He gets it for naps & bedtime only. He knows to throw them into the crib when he is done sleeping!
NOTHING wrong with it! Babies like to suck!!

Re: relying on the pacifier...honest opinions needed
There;s nothing wrong with giving a baby a paci. We gave DS starting day 1 in the hospital. Babies have a suck reflex and sucking soothes them. I'd much rather my child suck a pacifier than his thumb -- as another poster said, the paci can be taken away. You cant take their thumb away.
I will mostlikely wean DS off the paci around a year old. But right now, I see nothing wrong with him having it, and as pp mentionned, it actually reduces the risk of SIDS, so its a GOOD thing! I put DS to bed with his. Yes, it falls out constantly and its annoying to have to go put it back in (in the beginning he didnt cry if it fell out, but now at over 2 months, he does scream if it falls out, so I have to pop it back in his mouth constantly) but I know in a few months he'll be able to put it back in his own mouth and it wont be as big of an issue.

Re: relying on the pacifier...honest opinions needed
Thank you for the honest replies. I don't know why I thought introducing the pacifier was a bad idea in the first place. I guess DH and I really don't want her to need it in order to go to sleep, especially since she's been ok sleeping without it up until this point--somewhat different from her falling asleep with it in her mouth by chance.
The bottom line is that this is all so new, and I'm learning that sometimes the plans I made and the ideas I had in place before becoming a mother are simply not feasible, or as important, now that she's here.

We use the pacifier. Sucking soothes babies and I never saw anything wrong with using it. DD #1 still gets it for naps and bedtime, she loves it. DD #2 uses it when she is fussy or for sleeping.

Re: relying on the pacifier...honest opinions needed
You haven't done anything wrong! There is nothing wrong w/ using them in my opinion! My DS is 2 and still uses his (only for nap/bedtime)...I wish I would have weaned him sooner, but 1st time mom and all...live and learn! As a newborn though, they need that sucking reflex, and anything to soothe them works for me!

Re: relying on the pacifier...honest opinions needed
DS was a pacifier addict for the first several months. Sucking really soothed him. Now, at 10 months old, he mainly gets it when he goes to sleep. IMO, there's nothing wrong with giving a pacifier to a baby.

Re: relying on the pacifier...honest opinions needed
neither of my kids will take a paci \ I was desperate for my son to take it when he was screaming for hours and hours but no dice
