rent increase?

We have an apartment and we generally don't increase the first year, we do it on the second year anniversary. For some reason, we have bad luck when we do it after one year, and the tenant ends up not staying. Maybe it leaves a bad taste in their mouth or whatever.

When we do, we usually raise it about $40-50.

Yep I gave mine a $25 increase and she's threatening to leave. Says I have ordasity and I'm cheap. Meanwhile this is the same tenant who sister was visiting during this Christmas and she was leaving the apartment turned down the heat after being told not to touch the thermostat , which led to all the pipes freezing and costing me thousands of dollars and is upset with me and tells me I treat her like crap because I told her it was her sister's fault I told her as well as the guy from Slomin's and the plumber I can't stand people

So let her leave. Sounds like she's going to be a future problem.

Yeah, I agree I'm letting her leave just a pain in the butt to get new people in that's all . I like the idea that it was one person

This has happened to us also. We tried to increase a girl $25 and flipped her lid and moved out the next month. We don't charge a lot, so to think she would want to go through all that for $25 is so weird. We include all utilities also. I was kind of like, okay, bye. If things are so tight that she cant float $25 more, I don't really want her.

I do agree the whole showing, screening, rental process is a big pain in the butt. Then you get people show up cash in hand and want it right there before you've verified they work or called references, and they get mad that you won't just let them move in that day.

Re: rent increase?

I use to rent. I very rarely ever got a rent increase. Granted some leases where 2 years but I def. Didn't get an increase after a year. But I will say we were good tenants. I never complained and paid rent on time all the time. We rented houses so I had to pay rent plus all utilities.
I will be honest if I got rent increase after a year I would be annoyed and would probably look for a new place.

For those of you renters why is it so upsetting in a private home to get a rent increase but in an apartment complex or something it's standard and acceptable I get increases of my taxes I have to pay increases of the upkeep for the apartment on the current increases because some tenants don't give a f***

I only rented once in a complex it was town house not in this state and granted it was only for a year but they didn't tell me it would go up and if they did I would still be annoyed who wants to pay more money when they pay enough.

On LI rent IMO is out of hand the amount of money some people ask for is insane.i also thinking renting out at house is different because either the landlord lives there so they are making out they get to own their house while someone else is helping paying their mrogatge or they are renting out the whole house so they are getting money in from several people.

If the tenant was bad why even bother renewing the lease ask them to leave.

I would say be careful how its handled. if its not a legal appointment I have heard plenty of old tenants getting back at their landlords by reporting them.

I rented in a private home for a few years. We had about $50 increase every 2 years. I was fine with it.

By the way my apartment is beautiful
everything was made for my mother to live there
not some cheap materials and appliances full-size everything 2 bedrooms private parking in Weston Suffolk washer-dryer everything you do the comps she was only paying $1,700 a deal with everything .A dog allowed
Looking at the area school district neighborhood and McCombs I can get a lot of work but I don't want to deal with more people so I took a compromise and now all I get is insults from her and out and threats

If you're looking for a new tenant, my co-worker is looking. She'd be a great tenant. Very hard working and low drama. She has a teenage son, who is a great kid, and a very well behaved dog.

Re: rent increase?

I rented for years on my own. 3 years in one spot (no lease) and 2 in another (no lease) never an increase in either. It when I was moving out of both spots, I had found them new tenants and that’s when the landlord told me to tell them it’s $50-$100 more per month then I paid. Obv left on good terms and also left these places much nicer then when I found them!

One was a small 4 family building in Brooklyn and the other was a private house in east meadow.

Before moving out on my own, I rented a my family at one spot for close to 10 years. I think they raised us twice the entire time. We paid on time, good tenants, again.. fixed the apartment up on our own (with their knowledge of course)

In general I think it’s kinda sucky to raise rent ever year. A lot of People rent because they can’t afford to buy. If you have an excellent tenant - think about how much that $25 a month will really help you and how much it can hurt them then make a the decision

To the OP - if she’s an asshole, let her leave. She’s not worth the hassle. But if you get a good one in there next, hold on to them lol

I have a really hard time reading posts with no capitalization or punctuation, so honestly I just skimmed it because I can't make heads or tails of it. But I got the gist and I would not renew her lease. Sounds like more trouble than it is worth.

Well all this came out yesterday when I gave her the lease that she wanted . and when I told her that it will be a $25 increase is when s*** hit the fan she ready has threatened me insulting me and said she's going to call the town I told her she's more than welcome

I already accepted and moved on about the pipes and the door and the ceiling fan other b******* she's the one who rehashed all these thoughts which I never knew she had what a horrible cheap person I am and threatening to call the town of my so-called illegal apartment and told her I'll take her down there myself

I wish I knew how to copy and paste all the text messages I would post them up here to get everyone's point of view by the way she went and so far to send me a text message saying she doesn't feel comfortable paying this month's August rent because she doesn't have at least this was last week I said to her but you feel comfortable living in the apartment and watching TV in the apartment enjoying the air conditioning in the apartment

The more I play at these conversations th more infuriated I get I don't give a f*** is the point
I'm at luckily I don't need to rent the apartment it's just nice to have the extra$$

After all that I wouldn't be renewing her lease

Just a piece of advice...if you ask her to leave and she doesn't do so after the first month and stops paying you rent, start the eviction process immediately. It is so much easier and faster if you do it immediately after 30 days of non-payment. The days where the tenant stays for months without paying rent are over.

Is it a legal apartment? If it is, I wouldn't care what she was saying.
