Rental Car seats?

We're going to Orlando and are going to need to rent 3 car seats. I can't plug in 3 car seats on any of the websites and I can't find anywhere how much they charge. So is it normal to just get one when you get down there? Im thinking that since it's Orlando they probably have plenty of seats available, but obviously don't want to risk getting stuck without one. Bringing our own is just not an option, we don't have enough arms to carry 3 seats and we really won't be driving around all that much.

I'd call the rental company to make sure.

My SIL did have an issue with this when my neice was 1. She rented a seat and it was a totally inappropriate seat for Sophia. So she had to buy a new one at Wal-MartChat Icon

Honestly, I don't remember (but chelle will tell you that my SIL is LOONSChat Icon ) but I could ask her.....

I'd just call the company so that they an't claim they don't have them when you get there.

I checked mine in a laundry bag

What about checking them as baggage. Alamo charges $9.99 a day with a $49.95 max per seat. If you were to max out on the seats that's an extra $150. The baggage charge round trip might equal that, and IMO is better spent because then you know what seat you are using.

Yeah it's just that there are only 3 of us and 3 babies so it's going to be tough. But I don't really want to pay an extra $50 for a seat that might not be in great condition anyway Chat Icon

Take a big laundry bag, write your last name across it and check it, then you only have to get it to the curb and then off the belt, you know?

Are you taking Southwest? They do not charge extrat for baby gear...

We used one once- it was fine except it took us awhile to figure out how to install it.

Yeah Southwest. My biggest concern is lugging everything from the terminal to the rental car pick up, like if we have o take a shuttle we'll be loading up all our luggage, strollers, and 3 babies Chat Icon Then if we bring 3 car seats!! That's a LOT of stuff!!

Can you rent a cart at the airport or somehow get one? I've seen people with some type of airport cart before-- I mean, 3 women lugging 3 kids and baggage & car seats, hopefully they'd have mercy on you and try to help?? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Whats the weight limit on the Bjorn?

I'm sure we will definately get a cart... or three Chat Icon Chat Icon I mean it is doable, but guess we were just hoping to rent and take the easy way out !!!

So everyone usually brings their own seat? I'm suprised more people haven't rented, I never would have thought of bringing our own before Chat Icon

Re: Rental Car seats?

There are skycaps all around the airport and for a small tip, they will cart of your luggage to the rental car/shuttle area. I had so much crap with 2 kids alone, and they were a godsend. You can also loop your arms through the carseat straps and carry it on your back while pushing the stroller and pulling a suitcase. PITA, but do-able. I wouldn't rent one, too hard to figure out installation and the ick factor skeeves me Chat Icon

The weight limit on the Bjorn is 25lbs. I brought it when we cruised when DS was 8 months too b/c it was easier than lugging him sometimesChat Icon

Re: Rental Car seats?

I would try to bring the seats - you an get cheap car seat bags at BBB or BRU and they have wheels or straps that you can wear them like backpacks. I have also seen people flip them over and rest the seat on the back of strollers. It is a pain but I think you are better to do that then rent. Orlando isn't too horrible - there is a shuttle/train but you just wheel right onto it so you don't have to unpack anyone or your stuff. When you get to baggage claim just find a skycap they will help you - or they have a TON of luggage carts you can use (I don't remember how much they were but there were tons of them).

If you rent from Alamo, national and a few others they are literally across the street in the parking garage and very easy to get to. We usually rent from National and just walk over to the garage and then you just walk right up to the aisle you rent from and pick a car you don't have to wait in line.

The problem with renting is you don't know the condition of the seats (heard some are really nasty) so you don't know how old they are or whether they have been in an accident. You don't get installation instructions so you have to install it yourself with no help (they don't take any responsibility for rental seats so you are totally on your own). Also while you reserve them - I don't believe they guarantee that they will actually have one for you - I have read on disboards.com where people didn't have a seat at all (they ran out) or they were given a booster when they child needs a convertible.

I could be wrong but btw there is a seat I think is expensive but is called the radian or something similar that is a convertible and I think the seat folds up so that it is flat to carry it. Another option is what about those attachments that you can put onto your car seat that have a handle and wheels and if you are bringing something like a lightweight maclaren you could carry the maclaren and wheel your DC in the car seat.

Re: Rental Car seats?

We rented from Alamo at the Orlando Airport and it was a Cosco convertible seat. No bells and whistles. We go the last one on the shelf. The family behind us got stuck, I guess they had to wait for one to be returned. We had reserved one and so had they.

I'd have a back up plan in place if you get there and they don't have them.

You could check them with your luggage or gate check them, or use one or all of them on the plane if you are getting the kids seats.

For our most recent trip we brought DD's carseat, and used it on the plane. We used this nifty little invention to carry it through the airport. It worked really well.

Thanks SO much for this info! We are renting from National so that is definately great to know that we won't have to take a shuttle Chat Icon

Re: Rental Car seats?

Call the rental car place directly. I used to work for a rental car company at an airport and we did not have them in stock all of the time. If we had a reservation for it, we would grab one from the main office.
