Renting and telling the landlord..

Sorry if this is a stupid question Chat Icon We rent an upstairs apartment in a two story house. The bottom floor belongs to my landlords mother. Is it mandatory to tell your landlord once you're pregnant? Like, I know a lease has to include everyone who is living in the apartment...but do they need to know when you're pregnant or after the baby is born? Just curious...

I'm not sure if the same rules apply since you are in a house, but we had DS while we lived in an apartment complex and we didn't tell them.

Re: Renting and telling the landlord..

Why would you need to tell them anything at all.

Even if you were going to rent a new apartment, they aren't allowed to discriminate against people w/ children. Of course they wouldn't tell you that children are the reason they won't rent to you, but still.

It's like when an apartment listing says "suitable for 2" when it's a 2 BR. It usually means they prefer people without kids. If they came out and said "no kids", it's discrimination.

I just thought you would have to tell the landlord because the rent might need to be adjusted since now theres an extra person living in the apartment. I dont know, maybe Im over thinking this Chat Icon I tend to do that a lot and Im not even TTC yet Chat Icon Chat Icon I dont think my landlord would discriminate..I was just curiuos on what the protocol would be.

Chat Icon I do that too. We aren't TTC yet either, but I still look around the bedroom of my apartment and re-arrange furniture in my head to make room for baby stuff.

I also pick out baby bedding online everytime a pregnant friend of mine shows me what they picked out.

Re: Renting and telling the landlord..

When I lived in a complex I learned that we were only allowed to have 2 in a 1 br 3 ppl in a 2 br and 4 ppl in a 3 br. IDK if it is a NY law ,but I don't see why they need to know .

It depends if you like where you are living and intend to live there for a little while. I'm all about not burning any bridges. Maybe as a common curtesy when you're far along in your pregnancy you could tell them. Until then, tell her not to mind the sounds of the Chat Icon ! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

OMG! I was doing this yesterday with DH. I was like, "Ok, we'll put the crib over there and I want to keep the queen size bed in the room just in case my mom has to stay over" The crazy thing is that DH was all into the coversation!Chat Icon

Re: Renting and telling the landlord..

i think it depends on what it says in your lease agreement. i dont think you have to tell them you are expecting, just have to add your newborn to the leave when you give birth, this is how it works where i live. within 30 days of giving birth, you have to provide them with the childs BC so they can add them
