renting apt and changing locks?
If you rent an apt. in a house, are you allowed to change the locks? Do you have to give the landlord a key if you do?

You should be able to change the locks because the previous tenants could have given their key to everyone in the world....it's always a good idea to give the landlord a key so that in the case of an emergency it is easily accessed.

Re: renting apt and changing locks?
General leases say that a tenant must give the landlord keys to all locks.
I think the landlord needs to have access to his/her property for emergencies.
I think you can change the locks and give the landlord copies of the keys. I had to do this once in an emergency.
