replacing central air unit cost
I just wanted to see if anyone has recently replaced their central air unit, or has had it installed with existing duct work? Part of my system died and I have to get the whole thing replaced... oh the joys of being a homeowner..... I just wanted to see if I am paying a fair price. Thanks!

I have gotten a couple of professional quotes and the prices were beyond out of control. Got a hold of a referral though my BIL and this price sounds alot better. When I get home, i can provide some contact information. My original price was 7000-8000 with PSEG rebates. New guy who we will probably hire was 4700 with same size equipment and similar efficiency.
edit: 4700 included gas furnace, coil and condenser with eff of 85% mid range.

Re: replacing central air unit cost
We replaced ours in Oct 2009. I think we paid about $6k but there was some $1500 tax rebate too. Maybe something else as well.
We used existing duct work, they removed all the old stuff, moved the unit from our back yard to the side. We got a 2.5ton(I think) 16+ seer unit.
Eta: we got quotes ranging from $12k (lipa)to $5700

We have a Trane system which was acting up recently, but we were able to repair. If we needed to replace the unit the guy told us 3k for the unit, now plus labor I don't know but just the unit was 3k

Re: replacing central air unit cost
Ok sounds like I could have got it for cheaper but in the range pretty much. We are using a local AC place, they charged us a service fee already just for looking at the unit, which we applied toward the total cost.... quoted 7250 for new 3 ton Rheem compressor and air handler, and replacing thermostat since its really old.. not including 1k PSEG rebate. owning a home sucks sometimes lol.

Yeah our compressor outside died (its 17 years old!), and that was going to be 2750 i believe... but he said that it was better to change the air handler inside too since its 11 years old and would probably need to be replaced too within the next few years.
