Report card comments
How would you feel if you found out your first graders comment on his report card was the same exact as other kids in his class word for word? Wwyd, if anything? Especially if it addressed skills that you feel your child has?

Report card comments
My principal and ap read all report cards and comments before they go out and they would NOT let that fly. As a teacher, I would not feel comfortable doing that. I type my comments to save time, but each one is individualized for each child. As a parent, I'd be miffed. But I don't know what I'd do.

Re: Report card comments
As a teacher, I individualize, but do reuse certain phrases mainly to describe curriculum. And our principal reads them first too. How do you know this is the case?

Re: Report card comments
We usually give comments that relate to the curriculum.
For example, we worked on narratives.
Some got
Approaching standards of narrative writing Meeting... Exceeding...
Report card comments are vague, but we go into details during the conferences.

Re: Report card comments
As a teacher I am required to write a personalized paragraph. As a parent, I would not care if the teacher wrote the same comment for each child. I think personalizing is what parent teacher conferences are for.

When I taught that's how we did it- most of the kids would get 'meeting' but there would be a few exceptions. I always did one of that type and one focusing on effort, etc.

Report card comments
Our report cards have specific comment codes. We do not hand write/individualize comments, but instead pick from pre-made comments then go into details in the meeting.

Re: Report card comments
Apparently, this is the same comment she has been using for years. I get the generalization. Honestly, I feel that report cards mean nothing nowadays. My son gets 90 and 100 on every test every week (he has a math, spelling, reading comp, and phonics) test every week. He is reading above age level expectations for end of 1 grade. She showed me his benchmark grades last night and nothing was less than a 95. He received all 2 and 2+ on his report card. I get that she needs to show growth so by the end he will have 3 and 4. I just figure it would have been nice to atleast have the report card say he is doing well in x y and z but needs help in a b and c. Especially when kids I know who are struggling in things he is succeeding in (and vice versa) received the same comment. I guess I also feel that this part is a narrative(hence the opportunity) to write a paragraph. I would be ok if it was similar but differentiates a little bit (ie someone is meeting standards in reading comp and fluency and someone is approaching standards in reading comp and fluency). I spoke with a few people who had this teacher in years prior and found out they all had the same exact comment as well. IMO that's just lazy. There are only 19 kids in his class. She can take a little bit to think of something different for each child on 3 separate occasions. I teach hs with drop downs on the report card and I don't write the same thing for each kid.

Wow. I don't blame you for being unhappy. Like you said, even with the drop downs, you shouldn't be writing the same thing for each kid. But given that she has the opportunity to write an explanation, that's ridiculous. And I'd be very bothered by the fact he's receiving 2s on his report card but having 90-100 on everything in class. To me, she's not reflecting his grades accurately.

Ugh my pet peeve is teachers who give 2s to kids who are getting 100s just so they can show "growth"!!! I give 4s in the beginning of the year to kids who have earned them.mif you're working above grade level, you deserve to see that on the rx. If you are meeting expectations in my class, you get threes.

Re: Report card comments
Sounds like what happened when one of my son's was in 1st grade. My son never got 4's that year but was in top reading group (told by teacher) and got 100's on every math test. He is like a human calculator and I expected at least above average in math. The individual comments on the back made me feel like my kid was struggling but yet I knew that wasn't the case. I was a shocked. It stressed all areas of improvement and gave nothing positive to balance it. Had to make sure my son didn't see it our he would have been devastated.
A friend who's son had similar grades/academic level called me all upset at report card. As an educator herself, she was really bothered by it. She started reading her comments to me and they read the same. Everything except for the comments on behavior (our son's are very different in that area). I chalked it up to all laziness but it did make me feel weird and changed my opinion on the teacher. Every other teacher both my sons had before and since pretty much personalized most of the review comments and made me feel like they knew my child and what kind of student they are. I always welcome the areas of improvement but do like to know the teacher has gotten to know my child and acknowledges their areas of growth/strength as well.

I agree with this! The showing growth thing is total BS if you ask me. My daughter received some 4's on her first report card last year, and that's the way it should be. I would not be happy with a 2, and I would be speaking to the teacher and the Principal about that.
As far as comments, we get NONE. Our teachers don't fill them in, which drives me nuts!!

How do you even know this? Did you poll all the parents? Did I poll all the parents? No, but I was talking to a friend how i was upset with report card not matching his abilities and performance in school and she went over her sons report card and read comments and thats when I said that something sounded fishy. Then, I texted a screen shot of my sons comments to another friend and he had the same exact as well. And so then I saw a friend whose daughter had her last year and told her and she pulled up her daughters report card from last year, and low and behold, it was also the exact same. And then I ran into two girls that had the teacher 2 years ago and they said that theirs was the same when in first. So, even though I did not learn common core, my deduction skills tell me that probably all the kids have the same exact comment.

I agree. I don't understand why some teachers insist on giving twos at the beginning of the year. The teachers in my school say that that they can't give 4s because if the were proficient in the standards they'd be done with the grade. They thought I was nuts giving my readers fours. I teach kindergarten! If they are already reading don't they deserve a 4 in reading? Some teachers disagree....Don't care how they perform on tests...They say its too early to give 4s. I actually worried that my administration would reprimand me for giving 4s. Still, I could not justify giving less to a few of my students.

Re: Report card comments
Eh, I try not to read into it too much.
I know my kid and his capabilities. He just got his first report card.
His teacher is currently out on leave so I'm also thinking too most of the scores are just a baseline.
He got all 3s and one 4 for library of all things.
I wouldn't have seen that coming!
It's just Kindergarten so I will focus my energies more in the older grades...
