Repost: If anyone can offer advice and or info I would really appreciate it.
My FIL is turning 75 this yr and he is adopted, all his life he has wanted to know about his birth family. He was told I am assuming about 50yrs ago that its a sealed case and that when all the parties are deceased maybe they can open it. Is there anyway to do this now, I cant imagine both parents still being alive. Where would I even start? He was adopted in Manhattan.

Wow. I honestly have no idea where you could get this information (although I agree that both his birth parents and I assume adoptive parents are deceased). I can't imagine living life without "knowing" anything about the woman that brought me into this world.
Good luck! I hope you're able to get him some answers.

I would contact the NYS Department of Health. My DH is adopted and I was able to obtain "non-identifying information" from them. You may be able to get more b/c of his age though! Good Luck!!
