Resources for older kids on the spectrum
I went to HS with this girl who made some poor choices in life and is a single mother of 4 kids, different fathers, you get the picture...
She is always posting on FB go fund me links to raise money. I suspect she doesn't make much but I don't like the way she is going about seeking $$. The most recent, her son who is on the spectrum wants to go to college and learn to drive so she is looking to raise $10k for him.
Now, I know not everything is easily covered, especially when it comes to college, but my social worker radar is saying there must be some resources for him (I work with adults though).
She is a couple hours north of us.....any suggestions other than maybe not even getting involved?

I would email her a link to OPWDD. It's very involved BUT if she is determined and is looking to help her son every way possible. I would look to see if he qualifies they can cover/help in a lot of ways services, jobs and financially with certain things...if qualified.

Thanks. I had a feeling.
I know that my adult clients have gone through what I believe is now Access for things related to school and work.
Not sure what is covered though because I tend to work with more severe people who don't reach this point.
I think her kid is a junior or senior and has good grades. I also started out myself at a community college and then did a state school. My parents said if I wanted them to help, then this was the option.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that either and my dumbest financial mistake was going to a private university for my Master's.
Isn't financial aide also based off parent income? She keeps posting that she owns a house and this is why they don't qualify for anything but I'm skeptical....

You can get some financial aide without having to be on Medicaid or low income.

All high schools are required to have Transition Coordinators (at least in NY) and they would be the person she should contact. They should have a list of good schools that offer accommodations as well as any scholarship or financial aide programs that are out there.

I indicated as well to speak with the guidance office, I would think they would know this info too, or at least who to talk to.
