Results from Cailen's eye exam

Well, Cailen needs glasses.

Last month, at his well visit, he did the standard eye exam - they use pictures. He stood under the poster, identified all the pictures, but when he had to walk back and identify them, he couldn't do any except the top 2 lines.

At 1st I thought he wasn't cooperating, but when I saw him guessing - like saying the heart was a circle, it seemed he really was having trouble. He was given a referral - we went to Dr. Roberts in Plainview.

Today, before they dilated his pupils, they did the same thing with pictures. Again, Cailen wasn't answering correctly. The thing is - Cailen HATES being wrong, so it was hard to tell if he couldn't see, or if he didn't know what the picture was.

When he got the drops to dilate his pupils, he lay back, and did not make one peep. Not one complaint. He didn't cry, didn't react. He is my little brave man Chat Icon

I already have been inundating him with new toys - his new passion is Star Wars - Darth Vader in particular, so he already was looted up, but still - he was so amazing!!!!

We took him out for a smoothie while waiting for his pupils to cook
and he seemed fine - squinting a little from the light, but that was about it.

When we got back, Dr. Roberts checked him out. I was waiting for him to turn to me and tell me he is fine. Instead, he turned and told me that he can NOT believe that Cailen has been able to function up until this point. He has a severe case of astigmatism, and in one of his eyes - there is an entire area with no vision at all! He kept proclaiming how amazing it is that Cailen has been functioning so well - he really made it sound like Cailen is practically blind - and it seems that he kind of is - the drops did not even affect his eye sight because it is already so affected!

I must have asked him 10 times - without exaggeration - if he was joking. As if this would be the time to joke. I truly was shocked. Cai NEVER showed any signs - not to his daycare - nowhere. He is coordinated, athletic, recognizing letters, and numbers. The dr. told me a whole new world will open up for him... I didn't even know it was closed. So that made me sad - but friends on FB told me similar things happened with them which made me feel like less of a crappy mom...

Obviously, he needs glasses. I had to act thrilled in front of Cai, but I was sad. I know it's not the biggest deal - but his eyes, from the day I saw them opened in a sono - have always been my favorite feature on him. Those big, soulful, chocolate eyes not working well. Needing to be behind glasses for the rest of his life (which is what the dr. said - this won't fix itself - this is forever). He has terrible astigmatism and is far sighted - but it;s the astigmatism that the dr. kept talking about.

He got fitted today and will have them by Monday or Tuesday. Of course he looks adorable in them. I told DH he looks like the kid on Jerry MaGuire ("Did you know my next door neighbor has rabbitsth?" :hah)

Cai was hesitant at first, and hiding behind me, but when he saw a pair of red ones (on the side - not the frames thank GOD!!!) he was sold. He loves red. Red is Spidey, Iron Man, Darth Vader's light saber, etc....
