Resume Q-About a Time lapsed and Temp Work

This year (month) will be 2 years since my last professional job.

A little background- I was layed-off from a non-profit organization after being employed with them for 6 years. Basically, it was lack of funding and our program was shut down. At the time, it was perfect timing b/c I was getting burnt out from my job and I was dealing with Infertility (IF). A month later, DH got hired by the Airlines and I took time off from looking for a "real" job since we would be moving. We have moved twice since his hire but we have been in Houston for over a year now.

Also, during this time, I wanted to get solid answers about my IF and doctor's appointments/procedures/surgery took up most of my time. It has been refreshing to not work and just focus on my IF. I could not imagine going through my emotional rollercoaster and working F-T.

I am at the point now where I want to go back to work. These past two years, I did work at various temp agencies on short-term assignments. So here is my question:

On my resume, I want to show that I did work on temp-assignments since my layoff; however, I do not want to include it as my "professional experience". Basically what I am saying is that I do not want a prospective employer *think* I was just sitting around for two years.

So would you include the temp-employment in your resume? Or just wait to add the temp employment on an application once called for an interview? Would you add the temp employment at the bottom of your resume? How would you categorize/label my temp work?

Also, how would you explain the time-lapsed? If I say that since my dh is in the airline industry, we transferred temporarly until we knew his transfer would become a permanent position....is that okay to say? Or would it show that I am flakey?

To be honest, the only reason why I didn't work for two years was to deal with my IF but, I am not going to mention it.

I would put it at the bottom under a heading like Additional experience and i wouldn't say temp. Say independedent contracter or consultant!

Thanks! I like your wording. Now, I have to figure out what to say about the time in between jobs.

Honestly I, personally woudl make it appear there was none and make sure there is someone at your old co. who will vouch for you. i have always remained on good terms with my bosses and they would say anything for me. Is this an option?

I gree with melijane.

I would make sure the cover letter explains any gaps but anything under 3 months I wouldn't bother explaining and that you left your previous full-time position due to a re-org.

Since you did move twice I would just say that in order to be fair you did not want to commit to a permanent position until you were in a permanent location. Something like that..

Also, I would not lie about the dates of employment, the hiring company usually checks the dates with HR.

I am most likely going to say that.....I just didnt want to come across as someone who follows their husband's career and quit at a moments notice. I was at my last job for 6years so that should show for something!!

I am friendly with all my bosses too. No problem there.

Thanks girls!

I like the independant consultant way - I think that you could put all the missing time down - even if you were just "working" to find clients (read: time in between jobs)
