I think that whatever gives you support and hope, whether it be god or Mickey Mouse (not comparing the two...) is a fantastic way to get through something.
(now I am thinking that people are going to think I am comparing god to mickey mouse...)

When things are challenging and life presents itself as one big question mark, I think it's natural to search for answers wherever you can find them

It's very common & so ok. I think most people do even the religious ones. They search for more answers.

Well I DO live in Orlando. Sometimes, around here, I believe others think MM IS god.

ITA! And I don't think it makes you a bad person/hypocrite at all.
At the end of the day its about what gives you the strength to carry on. If that strength is derived from God, Religion, or eating ice cream, as long as it gets you through the battle is what matters.

Re: returning to god/religion
I do exactly the same thing. I pray every day, even show up at church once a week.
But the bad thing is, if it doesn't work out the way I was "praying" for, then I shun the church and stop praying...angry at God. It's really a terrible feeling...I'm feeling it right now...

Re: returning to god/religion
I think most people do that. When something out of your control happens, I think its natural to turn to the one/ones who do have control. If you believe that G-d, Gods, spirits, whatever- has control its natural to turn to them.
Personally, I pray a lot. not so formally. I don't go to temple as often as I should, but when I am feeling happy I thank G-d for all my blessings. When I am feeling sad I ask G-d for help and sometimes even ask, why me?
I just think its natural to believe that there is some reason for all the good and crappy stuff that goes on in our lives.

Re: returning to god/religion
i kinda turned to God when my mom was sick and when she died I kinda turned away. My prayers were not answered... Maybe its hypocritical, but I just couldnt bring myself to church anymore after she passed. My mom was very religious and church reminded me of her too much Although I still belive in my religion and respect it- its different.

Re: returning to god/religion
I think thats a natural time when people turn to God or a higher power. Thats when usually people "find" religion again and it helps to balance them and make their lives more meaningful...
I mean, for most of our lives, when things are going well, we are distracted and wrapped up in so many other things. when something happens (illness, death of a loved one, etc) those other things fail to have any meaning in our lives, and we are left empty. That is when the search for something else makes sense to us!

Re: returning to god/religion
When I had something tragic happen (the death of my friend- who was killed by a drunk driver) I actually turned more AWAY from God. I was always religious and prayed- and then, after that, I was so upset with God. I didn't understand why he did that to my friend... Now, when I pray- I pray to my friend and I don't go to Church like I used to. Maybe one day I will go back to the way I was- but it's been five years and it's still not the same for me. I'm just turned off from it.

Re: returning to god/religion
I returned back to God and the Church when James was born...it was the natural thing to do. Part of me truely believes that all the prayers he recieved help him stay strong and healthy.

Re: returning to god/religion
Natural... I think it's natural and instinctual. I've had family members turn their back on God when things weren't going there way and I've had family member surround themselves with faith and religion and spirituality and God when they were struck with tragedy and sickness.
IMO, it helps. It's comforting and when we're hurting or struggling, all we want to be is comforted and I think faith in God does that.

Re: returning to god/religion
I think when you "lose" your religion it is God's way of testing you to bring you back..it's when something traumatic or very stressful happens that you go back and see what you have been missing. JMO.

I find myself becoming spiritual when things are bad. It could be hypocritical of me, but I like to believe its my natural/inate urge to return to faith....

Re: returning to god/religion
Totally natural.
I think like anything else, it's natural to take things for granted when they are going well. Sometimes it takes an "awakening" of some sort to make them appreciate what they have.

Re: returning to god/religion
I totally believe it's natural to return to or away from religion when something traumatic happens. I think most people believe in some kind of higher power and it feels best to either turn to that power or shun it when something terrible happens.

Re: returning to god/religion
I just find it too depressing that there's a possibility of there NOT being a God. Can you imagine...after we die, that's really it? I can't bear to think about that.
