Ripping above-ground pool down & taxes

So it would stand to reason (to me at least) that if you have something like a pool, shed or something on your property that raises your taxes... and then you take it down.. you should now have lower taxes right?

How does this work, do you grieve your taxes? Has anyone ever tried to get the seller to take a pool down themselves as part of the buying agreement?

Taxes get re-assessed when you buy, right? So if the pool gets ripped down, the taxes should be less than before?

Sorry, lots of questions. Chat Icon

This is for something in the town of Smithtown.

Call the assessor's office at the Smithtown Town Hall - they would be able to tell you the exact steps to take on the legal path.

Thanks Betsy! Chat Icon I was planning on that tomorrow when they're open but I thought someone else might know in the meantime.

Everyone thinks we're crazy for not wanting a pool. We're just not pool kind of people! Chat Icon

Check to see if they have a permit for the pool. If they do, then it may have affected their taxes but if not...obviously it won't.
There was a pool at our house when we bought also, but no permit (it was a "gift"), and we took it down cuz we aren't pool people either - too much maintenance.

The house I bought had a semi-inground pool and when I removed it I called the town about this and they said it doesn't affect my taxes...
This is Town of Oyster Bay...

Follow up for anyone else who might want to know...

In the town of Smithtown, above ground pools do not affect your taxes.

So I wouldn't be saving anything by taking it down.

Oh well. Inground pools are a different story, but above-grounds make no difference whatsoever.

This is straight from the Tax Assessor's office. Chat Icon

We didn't want to deal with a pool either, we took ours down even though it didn't have any influence on the taxes.

I think sometimes, that no matter what decision you make, that SOMEONE will tell you you're wrong. Chat Icon

Funny, how everyone has an opinion when they find out you're buying a house. Chat Icon
