I wouldn't want to send my kids there.

Re: Riverhead school district yay or nay?
I went there, as did my siblings, and DW. That was a few weeks ago, though... (Around 1000 weeks, but I consider that just a "few"... )
At the time, it was one of the best districts around, education-wise. Almost no violence in the school, lots of good programs (AP courses - I wound up almost a full semester ahead in college from AP courses). Good sports teams. Very highly ranked in test scores and college acceptance.
However, I have no idea what it's like now.

Re: Riverhead school district yay or nay?
My asst. principal was an administrator there. He spent most of his day dealing with the gangs. At the end of the day they would often try to follow him home on the LIE, luckily for him he had an insane commute to the Nassau/Suffolk border and they would just give up and turn around.
Does that answer your question?
I wouldn't.

If I liked my child I would not send them there.

Re: Riverhead school district yay or nay?
I have heard just the opposite from teachers and some that attend school in the district. I have heard that it is a good school district and that some of the good school districts aren't as good as they are said to be. For example, I thought Wading River was a good district and I am being told by a few people that it isn't a good district and the school board is practically corrupt.
I think you really have to go and see for yourself to make judgements.

I don't think anyone would say it is good. It may be mediocre, but it definitely has more than it's fair share of gangs and violence. I think Riverhead is changing for the worse, and has been changing over the past 10 or 15 years when some of us were in high school.
The Shoreham WR school board may be corrupt but I think for the most part it is a safe, high-achieving district with some unique programs. To choose between the two I would definitely go with Shoreham.
I don't live in either district, but I know a lot of superintendants and principals from networking events and I have friends who taught in Riverhead and left because of the violence. I love the Mattituck/Cutchogue district out east.

I was told by more then one teacher that Riverhead is preferable over Wading River and they teach in WR. I was surprised by it too. I haven't done enough research to really know what is what.

Re: Riverhead school district yay or nay?
Well, as someone who lives in the Riverhead school district and has a family member who works in the school district and a family member who attends a school in the district I can say this: I would not hesitate to send Ava to one of the elementary schools, however, I would pull her our for middle school and high school.

I was going to post the same thing. I think the elementary schools are fine...actually I subbed there a few years ago and thought they were good. However, the MS and HS are another story.

Re: Riverhead school district yay or nay?
For grade school you would probably be fine, but beyond that is questionable at best. My MIL used to teach at Riley Ave school (a grade school) and it was fine for the most part.
My DH grew up out there and his parents chose to send him to boarding school, rather than Riverhead's high school.
