Traveling to Mexico with 5 month old.. any advice??

Hi ladies :)

I am going on vacation with my husband and our 5 month old baby girl, Alessia. Has anyone traveled with their little ones yet? Do you have any advice?

For instance:

- How should I wash her bottles? Is the running water safe?
- Use bottled water with powdered formula?
- Use sunscreen?
- Bring snap and go with car seat or a regular stroller?

Thank you so much!!

Gina

- How should I wash her bottles? Is the running water safe? I used the running water when I took Kristina when she was 6 months old. The resort purified the running water, and it was totally drinkable.
- Use bottled water with powdered formula? Even though the water was safe, I used bottled water that I bought at the store.
- Use sunscreen? ABSO - FRIGGIN - LUTELY
- Bring snap and go with car seat or a regular stroller? I brought the snap n go and her infant seat. We rented a car and I needed her seat with us.... It was too hot to be bothered with the regular stroller so I was glad that I didn't bring it.

HTH!!

also... bring a couple of bottles of RTF so that you have them ready for when the baby wants to eat in case you haven't had the time to get to the store to get the water.

I agree with all this! Where are you going in Mexico? Many larger "touristy" towns have a large Walmart that you will be able to pick up all the staples (diapers, wipes, etc) so you don't have to waste too much space in your luggage.

Thank you, Felice! We're going to the Riu in Riviera Maya. It was recommended by our travel agent :) I am going to contact the resort to see how far the nearest Walmart is.

Thanks again!!

It isn't THAT close but I know there is a HUGE Walmart in downtown Cancun. It should be less than an hours drive and if you have a car it is a straight and easy drive. I know there are also buses that go from Riviera Maya to Downtown Cancun but I wouldn't even now where to begin with that! Chat Icon

I would be hesitant about the running water in Mexico. Double check with your resort about purification. Also be aware if you eat outside of your resort. We went to Puerto Vallarta on an employee trip. Several employees got very sick when they ate off the compound & 1 was hospitalized.

eta. definitely sunscreen!

Re: Traveling to Mexico with 5 month old.. any advice??

you are brave! i'm traveling to Mexico in 2 days with 4 of my kids but we are leaving the 3 month old home Chat Icon .. Traveling with an infant is doable ... just alot of work.. There is a walmart in playa del carmen which is about a 20 minute ride from riviera maya.. you can take a bus or a shuttle or a taxi.. taxi is the most expensive but direct and easy.. about 20 dollars door to door. What are your plans for what you will be doing? alot of the resorts have palapas that you can lay the baby under.. i would definilty keep her out of the sun.. It's also very hot there so make sure she stays hydrated! I wouldn't use the running water personally, i would buy RTF for the trip. that way you don't need to worry about mixing the formula. i would take the snap and go and maybe buy the umbrella that you attach to it. ask the ped about the sunscreen i personally wouldnt use it i would just keep her out of the sun. if you will be on the beach i would buy a tent from one step ahead.. i have one and they fold up really small... when are you going? i'm so jealous i wish i was bringing my baby!Chat Icon

Gina.. wanted to add that 2 of my kids had diarrhea coming home from mexico last year and we stayed at a 5 star resort. i am positive it had to do with swallowing pool water. so i wouldnt personally put any water on any of the babies things.. i would but the disposable drop ins for bottles and boil the nipples. (i'm a nurse and a germaphobe though LOL )

Re: Traveling to Mexico with 5 month old.. any advice??

Thank you so much for all of your help, mommies! We are back from our trip and everything went well! I washed her bottles with bottled water because the water from the faucets were not drinkable. We put sunscreen on her every day and when we brought her in the pool, we stayed in the shady parts (ahem... which happened to be near the swim-up bar!)

We brought 2 RTF bottles of formula and 1 large container of powdered formula. We used the bottled water with her formula and everything worked out very well! We even had left over powdered formula :)

So I was all worried and she was a cool kat.. she even sat up for the first time unassisted... see for yourselves.

And thank you all again. You are terriffic!

Re: Traveling to Mexico with 5 month old.. any advice??

If you are staying in a major hotel chain, washing bottles is safe. But I would use bottled, name brand water for her formula. My son gets sick whenever its not our usual tap water so I always use bottled when we travel.

Definately use sunscreen- I would use Neutrogena Baby Free and Pure- We live in Southern Cali and have used it on my son since he was 3 months old with no problems.

I would bring the snap and go with your car seat. We have used this on every trip with my DD and now my DS and its so easy to put on the plane and use to get around.

FM me if you need more info- we have traveled frequently with both kids and took my DD to Mexico at 13 months old. Have a great trip!Chat Icon

Ack! I feel so silly for giving you advice- with two kids I never have time to read the whole thread! Glad you had a great trip!

Don't feel silly! You were being helpful! And it's great to get advice from experienced moms, so thank you :) I actually didn't bring the snap-n-go, but I will next time I go away.

Thanks again!
