Rocket Fuel found in baby formula!
Rocket Fuel
ATLANTA – Traces of a chemical used in rocket fuel were found in samples of powdered baby formula, and could exceed what's considered a safe dose for adults if mixed with water also contaminated with the ingredient, a government study has found.
The study by scientists at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked for the chemical, perchlorate, in different brands of powdered baby formula. It was published last month, but the Environmental Working Group issued a press release Thursday drawing attention to it.
The chemical has turned up in several cities' drinking water supplies. It can occur naturally, but most perchlorate contamination has been tied to defense and aerospace sites.
No tests have ever shown the chemical caused health problems, but scientists have said significant amounts of perchlorate can affect thyroid function. The thyroid helps set the body's metabolism. Thyroid problems can impact fetal and infant brain development.
However, the extent of the risk is hard to assess. The government requires that formula contain iodine, which counteracts perchlorate's effects. The size of the infant and how much formula they consume are other factors that can influence risk.
The study itself sheds little light on how dangerous the perchlorate in baby formula is. "This wasn't a study of health effects," said Dr. Joshua Schier, one of the authors.
The largest amounts of the chemical were in formulas derived from cow's milk, the study said.
The researchers would not disclose the brands of formula they studied. Only a few samples were studied, so it's hard to know if the perchlorate levels would be found in all containers of those brands, a CDC spokesman said.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it was considering setting new limits on the amount of perchlorate that would be acceptable in drinking water. A few states have already set their own limits.
The EPA has checked nearly 4,000 public water supplies serving 10,000 people or more. About 160 of the water systems had detectable levels of perchlorate, and 31 had levels high enough to exceed a new safety level the EPA is considering.

Re: Rocket Fuel found in baby formula!
I just read this and wonder WHICH ones.
I give up. B/w worring about the water, the formula, what's in our food, etc, it could drive me crazy.

Re: Rocket Fuel found in baby formula!
I havent had a chance to look further into this...
But I also know that perchlorates occur naturally. They can be found in drinking water too....
Im not poo pooing the findings but for them to title the article that way annoys me!!!!
Basically they should have titled the article something along the lines of "Do perchlorates belong in baby formula" etc...

I'm not saying this to cause controversy (at ALL), but this is one of the major reasons I chose to BF. Anything that's manufactured nowadays...you just never know where it comes from.
I hope they can figure this out and fix it ASAP!!

I know...but in the same regard, if you think about all the things you ingest, doesnt that transfer to the baby anyway?
All the hormones, chemicals, etc in all the foods we eat, wouldn't they too get into breastmilk? Asking an honest question b/c I thought of ALL of this when deciding b/w BF and FF.

Re: Rocket Fuel found in baby formula!
Here is another article on this topic with links to further details on the CDC report and links to see what is in your drinking water.
http://www.ewg.org/report/CDC-Scientists-Find-Rocket-Fuel-Chemical-In-Infant-Formula
This article also gives you access to a petition to sign and urges you to call your formula company. I put a call in to mine last night and am waiting on information from them.
I read into this a lot last night and its very scary and not new. I read research articles going back 4 years on this. The FDA and the Bush administration just kept pushing it under the rug. This report by the CDC is getting traction and the Obama administration has agreed to hear the case.
This is also in drinking water in some locations which is why its a problem - mixing the formula with the water increases the dosage putting it at unsafe levels.
Here is a link to information on the chemical: Perchlorate Info....
ETA:
I wanted to answer the question posted right above my post - perchlorate does appear in breastmilk, I read about a study done on bm samples. The issue with the formula is that its like a double whammy - perchlorate from the formula and the water you mix it with.
Even breast-feeding is no safeguard against perchlorate contamination. In 2005, researchers at Texas Tech University found perchloratein 36 breast-milk samples from nursing mothers in 17 states; the average concentration in breast milk was five times greater than in dairy milk.

i KNOW you didn't say this to cause controversy (truly) but this makes me feel so awful... i had to start giving DS formula b/c my supply tanked once i went back to work and now we are even giving him the "cheaper" BJs brand formula to save $$.
what if that is the brand that has the elevated levels in it? then what?

exactly my point. It's extremely scary what we ingest. I want to crawl into a bubble when I think about it.

Yes, and we eat manufactured foods that have god knows what in them everyday too (not saying YOU per se, but tons of moms that BF eat whatever they want..).
They even said that this chemical is found in drinking water too....so if a BF'ing mom is ingesting a lot of water with this chemical, that in turn can go to baby, no?
I would say that 99.99% of the time or higher formula is FINE and does not harm babies. Sorry if I come across as defensive, but so much is out in the world today we just don't know about.

This is INSANE but remember what happened in China. Companies push things under the rug. I would call every company and demand answers.

Also, I didn't know that there were acceptable levels of ROCKET FUEL. Seems to me that ZERO is the only okay level.

Grr I wish I could just give her whole milk, like they did when we were little (starting at 6 months instead of 12).

I just called them again and they said they got more info.
That yes, it can contain perchlorate, as all foods and waters MAY. But they also add iodine, which negates the effects of the perchlorate. And all their products meet FDA, blah blah blah.
But of course, as the article states, it's the small amt in formula thats ok but if you mix the formula (with the perchlorate) with water (if it has perchlorate) that is where you can have a dangerous level that adds up.
Sheesh. I freaking give up.

nope, BF'ing isn't safe either, according to a new european medical report Apparently, a good portion of the pesticides/fertilizers used to grow our veggies accumulate in our bodies, and are rather concentrated in milk.... to the point that the EU is recommending that moms cease BF'ing at 6 mo, becuase at that point, the risk of excess pesticide exposure to the baby actually outweighs the benefit of breast milk Of course I saw that while I was pumping
I give up too! I BF a little and give a lot of organic formula... but organic means nothing if the milk is contaminated becuase the cows drink contaminated water when will it end?
Then there's the RTF formula issue.... we're all in a fuss about BPA bottles... but most RTF is packaged in containers containing BPA... I swear chemistry is often not a good thing.....

Ok, I'm gonna say it. Whether you BF, FF, RTF, Powder, BPA, etc. There is always going to be risks out there. I'm a FF mom and I'm not too worried. Why make yourself nuts with all this stuff.
Sorry if I sound harsh, but JMO. The more you investigate, the more nuts you'll make yourself. Yes, you'll be "educating" yourself, but for what purpose? To make you more cautious of daily things? To worry about everything? There are too many "what-if's" in life. Just go with the flow. Again, JMO.

Aren't the RTF is recycleable plastic? Which would mean it does not have BPA (# 7 on the container)?
