Room temp and fan for newborn

Hello to all you moms!

After spending 2 months in the NICU, our precious daughter, Isabella, is coming home this Monday! Of course, as nervous first time parents we have so many questions and concerns. For instance, could you ladies tell us what the ideal room temp is for a newborn? The nurses at the NICU have told us that we should maintain a temp of between 68 -72. A cooler room temp is suppose to be one factor in preventing SIDS. Also the use of a fan and good air circulation is also important in SIDS prevention. We'd love to hear your ladies' thoughts and recommendations. Thanks for your advice and feedback!

We have an air conditioner unit kept on 68 as well as a ceiling fan we keep on low to circulate the air. Congrats and good luck!

I keep the central air on about 72 during the day. At night it's on 69 or 70. In the beginning, she was swaddled (and warm) I liked the house on the cooler side, so she wouldnt sweat. Now at 5.5 mos, she wears footie PJ's and a sleep sack and is fine with the house at 70 at night.

We were told the same thing re: temperature. However we found anything in the mid-60s to be so cold that we were uncomfortable. We have kept the room around 70 and found that cool enough that we felt safe and she was cozy in her gown and swaddle...

A big welcome home to your little girl!

We usually keep our CAC on 72-73 degrees at night for DS who is 4 months old. He sleeps in footie pj's and a sleep sack unswaddled

Congrats! Fellow NICU mommy here (dS spent 7 long weeks) so I know how excited and nervous you probably are. We keep AC between 68-70 and ceiling fans on. Feel free to FM me if I can answer any other questions on life after the NICU Chat Icon

Thanks ladies for all the feedback! The only problem here is that we are renting and the landlord has control of the central air and she has it set for 75 during the day and 74 at night. I'm afraid this is too warm for our baby. I gave her a call yesterday about lowering the temp, especially at night and I am waiting to hear back from her. I dont know if she will be willing to do this because of the increased electric bill, but we would be willing to compensate her for it. Fall is almost here so this shouldnt be a long term thing. Do you think we should be overly concerned about a room temp of 74 -75? How would you handle this situation? Thanks again!

Can you set up a standing fan to keep air constantly blowing around the room to keep it cool? Or install a window A/C unit temporarily....prob no more than a month and then the temp will be falling as fall comes.
