Root canal
I have to get root canal in a couple of weeks. I've never done it before. Was it awful ? I've got a great dentist, but I am nervous.

I was like you - totally freaking out - but it was not a big deal at all. The needle with the novocaine is the worst part!

They did for me. It's really not too bad. I would just take some advil before you go in or as soon as you're done to help as the novacaine wears off.

Root canal
I had one a few years ago and it didn't hurt at all. I was surprised because I always thought root canal = horribly painful procedure. I didn't feel them inject me with novacaine, so I'm guessing they numbed it before.

My root canal was not painful. The novocaine injections were the most painful part.

Re: Root canal
It shouldn't be any more painful than a filling. Once you ate numb, you are numb.

The only thing that hurt was my jaw from being open so long. Other than that, the discomfort I felt once the Novocain wore off was taken away with 2 Advil!

Re: Root canal
I've had 3 or 4 maybe 5 they really aren't painful. U can ask for the topical so the needles don't hurt as well. I like to wear sunglasses & just close my eyes :)

Re: Root canal
The worst part is the needle for the numby meds. You don't feel anything after that. And I only took Tylenol that night...

Root canal
I had one right before my wedding and it was awful - it was an emergency so for me, the worst part was the pain I felt before I went in. During the actual procedure, the worst part is getting the Novocain shot.

Re: Root canal
You'll be okay! Like everyone else said, the needle with the novacaine is the worst part, and you only feel that pinch for a couple of seconds, then you're nice and numb.
Just focus on your breathing to keep yourself calm.
All I needed afterward was a Tylenol or Advil.

Thanks guys ! I generally have a very high pain tolerance , but I've had some awful dental experiences, so I freaked out a bit.

Re: Root canal
I just had an emergency root canal two Fridays ago and finished it up this past Friday. I was SO WORRIED, but it was the anxiety that worse than anything. I made myself sick for nothing. It was really no big deal at all, didn't even hurt. Novicaine was the worst part as everyone already said.
I'm gearing up now, though, to go back to my regular dentist and get a crown. Not sure how long this whole process is, but I hope it is also pretty easy.
The pain of needing the root canal is not something I would wish on my worst enemy. The relief was immediate. And even now my jaw is just a bit sore (it was a molar). GL!!!

It's really not bad at all. Don't worry!
But don't take Advil before you go. You shouldn't be on any meds before you go to the dentist.

As most have said, it's really not bad at all! You always hear people complaining about it, so I expected it to be bad and was nervous. I was pleasantly surprised. You really don't feel anything after the shot and you should have the topical first. I just was very sore after, but I think most of that was having my jaw open so long, I have TMJ. Good luck!

I agree with skipping Advil before the procedure. Take one to three after (600mg), but never before!

I actually like them the best out of every dental procedure I've ever had lol!! They are no prob. my tip is to try to move your mouth as little as possible - the less you move it the longer the numbness lasts. If your dr. does gas, ask if you can have that w/the Novocain.

It's not bad at all. The worst part for me was the smell from the drilling and the fitting for the crown. Root canal itself was piece of cake.

Re: Root canal
I've had two. One after each kid- they killed my teeth! Anyway, it wasn't bad at all. I took Tylenol after before the novicaine even wore off and then before bed. I felt fine the next day.
