Rough night last night, rough day today...(TMI Warning)

And tonight's not looking much better.

Jake has a horrible case of diarrhea. Must be a stomach bug of some sort. It's caused him to get a FIERCE diaper rash. The poor kid screams and sobs during diaper changes, begs me to stop...so basically, yeah, both of us are crying at every diaper change.

I left his diaper off for alot of the day. Even let him run around outside naked to try and help the rash. I've never cleaned so much poop in my life as I did today.

And it looks like it's going to be a long night tonight too.

I know there isn't much I can do for the diarrhea besides keeping him hydrated but ANY TIPS for handling these horrific diaper changes or clearing up this rash would be really appreciated... I've tried every diaper rash cream that exists. The problem is that he won't stop pooping long enough for the rash to even have a chance to heal. My poor baby is miserable and I feel helpless. The only thing I can think of is some kind of barrier - like vaseline on his tush. I'm normally not a fan of vaseline but it will at least ease some of the pain a wipe causes.

You may even want to opt to going back to cool, wet papertowels. Wipes do sting them.

Have you tried bananas, rice, etc?

I know this sucks. I've been there. I hope it's better soon.Chat Icon

I would prob nix the wipes for now- it prob stings him...

How about an oatmeal bath?

Have you been using the BRAT diet to try and bind him?

Ive also "heard" fresh apple (not apple sauce or juice) slices can be binding as well....

He just turned two - can he take it? My ped also recommended a natural anti-diarrheal the last time he was on augmentin - I think it's called acidophyllis, but all the health food stores by me were closed today.

Anyone have any experience with that?

Barb - I did switch to wet paper towels already but I will try maybe wiping with vaseline on it...

Rice & bananas - got it. Will definitely do that tomorrow.

Stay with BRAT diet and definitely use cool paper towels, put on Triple paste, then a layer of vaseline over it to keep it on and let it do its work.

I hope he feels better. Chat Icon

Believe it or not but good old baby powder was what got us through 2 weeks of diarrhea and horrible diaper rash this past May. I tried everything--with no results--and finally my mom convinced me to try Baby Powder. The rush was completely gone in three days.

I guess some good old methods stay true no matter how old they are! I swore to start listening to my mom from then onChat Icon

So, give baby power a try and I hope your son feel better really soon!

Re: Rough night last night, rough day today...(TMI Warning)

aww poor babyChat Icon I just went thru this w/my 2 year old-
just do the BRAT diet, keep him very hydrated(pediate pops-drink) dont wipe him down there-rinse him w/warm water, aveno oatmeal baths a couple of times a day, triple paste with vasoline or A&D over it to act as a barrier...defiantley no immodium, my dr was dead against this-said it works against the natural process of the body healing itself.
ETA- I have tried acidophyllis in the past, it really helped, they sell it at CVS or Duane Reade

Yes, acidophillis. Thats worth a try, or some live yogurt. That should help!!! Also, slather on the thickest layer of cream/vaseline that you can!!!

Poor baby! I hope he feels betterr!!!

My daughter would get sores, thats how bad the diaper rash was. When cleaning her I used large cotton balls with Mineral Oil. Doesn't sting and makes a barrier. Try it, it worked wonders.

Acidiphillus is a pro-biotic. It's great when they've been on antibiotics, etc. to help grow the necessary bacteria he needs to boost his immune system. I've given it to my kids when they are getting repeatedly sick.

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing because the one I'm thinking of causes loose stool if you give too much.

I can only help with the creme.

My MIL has concocted "Grandma's Miracle Diaper Creme" and my SIL's have sworn by it for years.

She came up with this because you can't use strait powder anymore so she mixes vaseline and Gold Bond Medicated Powder in a container to get a thick paste. So far no diaper rashes for us. It was used on all of my nieces and nephews and both of my SIL's swore it was the only thing that worked and worked fast... within a few hours. Try that, it will form the barrier and help it heal.

I have used over the counter lotrimin when Talia had a really bad diaper rash - ask your dr. if that would work - it did wonders for us.

Brat diet all the way - eliminate fibrous foods - no whole wheat. Give him lots of carbs/bananas. Hang in there!!

Thats a good point! It could be a fungal infection! Noah had that we used a lotrimin type cream. You might want to speak to your pharmacist.

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the advice & hugs ladies Chat Icon

Last night wasn't too bad, better than the night before that's for sure. The rash is still not better but the diaper changes are getting better. Several diaper changes already this morning and wiping with vaseline on the wet paper towel is working pretty well but I'm going to try the cotton balls w/mineral oil too - I think it might clean better.

I'm going to the store in a little bit to pick up some more BRAT diet foods...
