RP - TTC and looking for a new job

DH and i are TTC now but i'm just miserable at my job and want to start looking for a new one. but DH feels that it would be a bad idea because what if we get pregnant as soon as i start a new job? he thinks that my new boss would be upset and that i wouldnt have accrued enough time for maternity leave. he wants me to tough it out where i am now and look again after we have a baby.

but what if it takes months for us to get PG?? dont get me wrong, i love the work i do and i love my coworkers, but my bosses are unbearable! im getting to the point of dreading going into work everyday.

what would you do? would you send out your resume and see what happens? or would you just tough it out where you are now?

I would send out your resume asap. Get out of there. Nature will take it's course. You may be surprised at how many companies offer maternity leave day 1.

Also being stressed out about your job is not going to make getting pregnant any easier.

Good luck.

Re: RP - TTC and looking for a new job

I was only at my job for about 4 months when I found out I was pregnant. They''ve been very good about it and I am getting all my vacay and FMLA/disability. Technically, I really should have been there for a complete year to qualify. They are also being very accommodating and letting me come back in a different job capacity so I can work more from home/have more flexibility, for the same pay.

The only time I could see this being a problem is if you actually were already pregnant and changed jobs. My friend just went through this and they ended up "laying her off" after she disclosed she was a couple months preggers. They told her it was for financial reasons but she suspects otherwise.

I also hate to be a negative nelly, but unfortunately, many couples have a lot of issues getting pregnant so if a good opportunity comes along elsewhere, I''d consider it. I would also look for a job that does alllow flexibility, like working from home/setting your own schedule.

Keep searching and TTC. You never know how long it will take you to conceive..just ask any of the ladies on the IF board. I hope you don't have any issues though Chat Icon Life has a way of working itself out. If anything, get a new job then put off TTC for a few months - this way when you give birth you will be there for a year and depending on your company's size etc you will be eligible for FMLA. Plus you never know what your new boss will be lilke - my boss found out I was TTC when I was in tears in my office one day and turns out she went through similiar issues as me!! You just never know. I may be the voice of dissent, but no way would I TTC and look for a new job--way too risky IMO. The job market is very unhstable right now and there is no guarantee you will find something quickly. It could take a long time to find a new job and get pregnant, but I wouldn't do both at the same time, especially if you started a new job pregnant and had to take maternity leave. I'd send out my resume for feelers before quitting, but I wouldn't actively TTC at the same time. Everything will work out jut right for you...hang in there Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: RP - TTC and looking for a new job

Definitely don't quit your job yet! You don't need to stress over finding a job, the market is terrible out there! Atleast you know what you're involved in. You could send out your resume, get sold on a new job, quit, start new job and find worse problems!

I left my job after 5 years during my first IVF cycle (September '08), it just wasn't a good environment for me (long story). I am now jobless and not pregnant, going into my 2nd Ivf cycle. I have a pretty decent resume and I am not able to find a job, not even part time. There are so many qualified unemployed people out there competing! No one wants to hire me for jobs I'm over qualified to do, and I can't take on a commitment with what I am qualified to do because I may not be there long term (that would just ruin my resume, my reputation).

You don't need the stress of such drastic change; get pregnant, then worry about that transition. Atleast staying with your job will evidence longevity and guarantees a paycheck!! I'm not sure of your field, but that longevity is usually important on your resume.

It doesn't sound too bad where you are. You are managing. Stressing over $$ will be worse while TTC! I will have to agree with your DH. Chat Icon
Good Luck!
