Runners knee injury question

My DH is always telling me to stop running because I will have Knee problems later in life. The other day I ran 10 Miles and was trying to pick up my pace which I did but the next day I had not a pain but a weird sensation by my knee. Everytime I walk down the stairs I would feel it. It actually scared me because I do not want any knee problems, so I took a brake from running . Is running at a slower pace better for your knees. Should I stay off the concrete? Thanks

Black top is easier on your knees than concrete...that's why I prefer the road over the sidewalk. Trail running, or dirt is the ideal condition for running, as the surface is much softer and gives a lot more than concrete too. Also not a bad idea to just ice your knee after your run for 7-10 minutes...can't hurt along with some Advil to reduce any kind of inflamation.

Picking up your pace can aggravate the muscles and tendons, so you should slowly incorporate a faster pace...try starting with intervals.

Good luck and feel better Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Runners knee injury question

Have you seen an orthopedist about it?
I have a lot of pain in my knees (I have problems with the cartilage) so I can't run every day, I just do it a few times a week and alternate it with other types of workouts. Also it's important to keep the strength in your knee so it won't hurt as much, so maybe consider doing some work on the machines for your knees to strengthen them.

Thanks for the advice. I will do my best to run on black top or on a trail and I think I need to not push so hard with my pace.

DH is training for a marathon and just screwed up his knee....he thinks he got it from running hills and he wasn't used to doing that...anyway, he is seeing a Dr. and is icing it all the time....
