Running in the heat
Maybe it's just me but I do not do well when it is hot outside! I run best when the temperature is between 45 - 55 degress. Ugg ths Sunday is going to kill me. I would rather run in the rain!

Re: Running in the heat
I'm a little worried too, since it will be my first run of the year with this kind of weather. I usually do ok in the heat, that's the least of my problems right now lol. It shouldn't be too warm at 8:00am, so I think we'll be ok!

I'm the opposite. The cold mornings really do a number on my lungs. I feel like I can't get enough air in.

Re: Running in the heat
Ideally, people want to run in 35-55 degree weather.
I actually think we might not be that bad off on Sunday, since we start at 8. and this course is much shadier than how the course used to be.
My stomach is still turning thinking about 80!

I picked up my race packet last night! I'm getting so excited but nervous at the same time! I can't wait until Sunday! I just have to get through the first mile and if my leg isn't too bad, then hopefully i can actually enjoy it! Good luck!

yes - everytime you can think about it today and tomorrow - take a sip of water - I have a feeling we will be needing it! but be careful about sunday morning! don't drink too much that you have to go during the race!

I hope your leg feels good. The first three miles are pancake flat, so hopefully it will help you ease into it!

Re: Running in the heat
just checked weather.com:
Westbury, NY
8 AM: 67 - 75% humidity
10 AM 72 - 68% humidity
doesn't sound as bad as it could be. in 2000/01? it was 84 at the start!
I'm definitely throwing my A goal out right now. I'm going to start at B goal and at mile 8 (the elevation peak), I'll adjust my pace.

Re: Running in the heat
I went to see the 5K today and it was a tiny chilly at the start, but hot at the finish. The sun was just beating down. Make sure you put sun protection on and a hat!!
jean - the whole race is pretty flat:
even though it doesn't look like it on this graph - 80 feet elevation is nothing - especially being spread out over 5 miles!
the biggest "bumps" are on post ave going over the northern state and on the wantagh, you go over an overpass.
good luck everyone!

Re: Running in the heat
I know it's a shot in the dark with 5000 runners, but what is everyone wearing? Do you think we would recognize each other?
I'll be wearing a white tank with black lycra shorts and a white visor.

Re: Running in the heat
I HATE running in the heat! I am so slow and do not function well at all. It was anywhere between 85-89 during my race in NJ, in the sun the whole time! I almost died! It was my worst half marathon ever...not terrible but I was just glad to finish! Thank god for running through neighborhoods and people who were letting us run through their sprinklers!
