I don't have a problem appreciating other countries...I just have a problem appreciating countries that hate us.
Yes, that's right. Everyone in France hates us. I'm sorry, but that statement just does not make sense to me. Sounds like an example as to why so many people don't like Americans.

I actually boycott the Harry Potter movies because JK Rowling put a ban on hiring American actors for the films
Of course, when it comes on HBO, I grab the popcorn
I wouldn't call it a ban...she's British and her books are set in the UK - she wanted authentic English actors...not some American who was going to chop-job the language (ie: Renee Zelwegger).
However, I'd boycott the movies based on the terrible acting!
I actually think the acting is quite good.
And as for butchering accents...well, plenty of Brits think Renee Zellweger did a great job and you can imagine what it would mean to fill those shoes - Bridget Jones is like a British National treasure, so for an American actress to play her...it's like a Brit playing Lucy Arnaz or somethign.... And as someone who lives in Britain, I can tell you that she did a lot of the subtleties of the accent justice!
I should have clarified re: HP - the 3 children's acting grated my nerves...I thought the adult's were fantastic.
As for RZ - I am so not a fan of hers...so that is again totally biased and jmo.
As for the other comment about an entire country hating us - that's just some good, old fashioned, ignorance.

Re: Russell Crowe hates americans...
A friend of mine went to France and had the most horrible experience. She found the people to be so rude. In fact someone told her that americans are not welcomed in France. I don't know who this to her and why...but it was uncalled for...

Re: Russell Crowe hates americans...
I am sorry that your friend had a bad experience.
I am sure that many people from France go home and say the same about Americans. I mean if I had gone on sterotypes I would never have moved to NYC. New Yorkers are thought of as cold, rude and obnioxous. Yet, I have found overall it to be a friendly place. Are there people that fit the NY sterotype? You bet, but you can't roll everyone up into that description.

Re: Russell Crowe hates americans...
Not to hijack, but the issue that the French have with Americans is again a case of a few causing trouble for the many.
My friend and I visited France and found that we were treated fine for the most part. Our attmpets to speak French, as bas as they were, seemed appreciated.
But one night at three in the morning there was a woman (American) screaming out her hotel room window into the street (a couple floors above us). The hotel was in a residential neighborhood so I am sure the locals were ******. As were my friend and I as we were woken up.
The first time I was in France I was with a bunch of people from my tour group who were Australian. They were all loaded and so loud. And a woman looked at my group and said, "Effing Americans!" I thought that was funny since I was the only American in the group (and the only sober one).

YAY! Because they didn't support us in the war, many poeple "hated" them. If French people were visiting NY and or America at this time, do you honestly think they would be treated very well?
In my opinion, I hate the obnoxiousness and sense of superiority that many americans have.

Yes, but that is their right. Lots of countries are not supporting our invasion of Iraq. Including a lot of Americans. I guess we should change the name of German potato salad and teach them a lesson too.

They're KIDS. IMO they did a spot better than our Long Island Darling Natalie Portman has done in the Star Wars movies.
::Looks at own Avatar, loves her Ron, Hermione, and Harry::
And any time you hear ANYTHING about JK Rowling or the books, go to her site www.jkrowling.com or www.mugglenet.com . There's where you'll get accurate news. She placed no such ban on any actors, period. The decision to keep the casting British was made by Chris Columbus, who HIMSELF is American.
The children *had* to be British. For goodness' sakes it's hard enough for kid actors, now you want them to do an accent convincingly too?
And from an HR standpoint, I'm sure you understand the concept of Bona Fide Occupational Qualifications (BFOQs)? In the Disney parks, you must have certain qualifications to play certain characters. A black person, even a very talented one, cannot play Cinderella. This is not billed as descrimination.
ETA: Eroxgirl, in her infinite wisdom, has just reminded me about the Cinderella movie with Brandy and Whitney Houston. So yes, a lovely, very talented, Black person has played Cinderella.
I meant in the PARKS, Rebecca. Nutjob.
OH, and ETA again: Susan Bones is played by Chris Columbus' daughter, an American. She's the redheaded Hufflepuff who always seems to be in class next to Hermione, even if the Hufflepuffs oughtn't be in that class.
