S/O: school lunches around the world
Just saw this and thought it was just as interesting/telling as the "Groceries for a week around the world":

Very interesting. Again, the US looks like one of the least healthy options. Italy looks yummy and I love that they use fresh, local ingredients. I think that is one of the reasons the food there is so delicious.

I think is sad that this country that is suppose to be the best in the world is feeding our kids garbage, most of the other countries look like is home cook style food that is probably a lot less processed

Are these for real? I don't ever recall a school lunch looking like that. Most of the countries seem to have a lot of food for a kid.

Re: S/O: school lunches around the world
The Asian diets are the healthiest / very low calorie as well. The dishes they show take a very long time to make, especially the soups, meat prep, and some of the vegetables. In Asian culture most times grandma does most cooking while everyone is working. Our parents do most of the cooking for us so we are not spending hours in the kitchen. US diet looks crummy, but at the same time I don't think Americans have the time or family support ( in many cases) to take 2-2.5 hours to prepare dinner. The people I know do eat healthy , but not like the Asian diets shown unless they have help

My cousin is an award winning chef at a resort in Sicily. . . during the day he was hired to make lunch for the preschool! He makes their lunches daily from locally grown fresh ingredients! He brought some of the "macaroni and cheese" home for me once and it was amazing!

I was going to say that some of the US ones definitely look much healthier here, but then I see that they were homemade by grad students versus what was provided by the schools to all students. The pics towards the bottom by dirtcandynyc.com are kind of disgusting looking...
I need to go to pre-school in Japan. Loving the variety there!

Re: S/O: school lunches around the world
I can honestly say that I would NEVER eat a single thing that is served to the kids at my school. The food they serve is so processed and disgusting.
When I taught at a private preschool, the lunches came from an organic bag lunch company, and they were AMAZING. They were things like sunflower butter and jam sanwiches, organic cheese and crackers, whole wheat english muffin pizzas, etc. They all got Honest Kids to drink and fresh fruit to go with it. I used to pray for kids to be absent so I could have one!

My son was having school dinners (that's what we call our lunches in the UK) and he was having a baked potato every day!! I send him in with a packed lunch now and he can have a school dinner on Fridays as a treat. He likes the puddings (desserts)
Eta...our school has options like vegan, vegetarian and halal.

It is so wonderful that the pre-school did that! I wish we could get better funding so children could have healthy things for lunch.

Me too! And the sad part is that healthy vegetarian food, beans, fruits and veggies, etc. should be cheaper than meat, but the way meat is subsidized makes it artificially cheap, so our kids are eating nasty processed meat instead of fresh, healthy stuff.

Those Asian lunches probably have tons of MSG. They use it like salt there.
Interesting article about MSG and how it really isn't THAT bad for you:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2005/jul/10/foodanddrink.features3
ETA: even more worrying- the fact that the US lunches are the only ones to use so much plastic! All the other countries use regular silverware, etc.
