S/O to class size...is there a cap or maximum?
My sister is concerned about her kids' class sizes this year. Her kindergartener is in a class of 27, her third grader is in a class of 29.
Both grades had additional classes in previous years, this year they dropped a class in almost all of the grades.
Is there a maximum or cap on public elementary schools in NY? Is this determined by the state DOE or by individual districts?
She and her neighbors will go to their Board of Ed meeting this month, but are wondering the most effective way to have their concerns addressed...

There are caps, the teachers union in each district agrees to a number. I believe there is also a state cap. I would talk to the classroom teacher first. I'm sure she/he is not happy with a class of this size. Next go on notice with the school principal then write to your BOE so you are on record and get to the next BOE meeting with as many people as you can. When it comes to the BOE there is strength in numbers. You want the teacher and Principal on your side, which I'm sure they will be. Unfortunately you may be stuck this year as the budget is set and class is formed. Make Some Noise let them know its unacceptable or they will keep rolling forward with classes this size.

Thanks so much for the advice. I sent this information over to sis, she and neighbors are making preparations for the next BOE meeting. Their teachers and principal are on board! Hoping this comes to resolution for all of them...
