Sachem feeds in from a large demographic area. I think the problem with East is honestly the demographics. If you look North is performing better. I'm going to be honest here and say the idea of my kid going to high school in Farmingville is worrisome to me. We are is a financial mess right now. It's really bad, we have an alarmingly low rate of funds. Our board has totally screwed us in making poor decisions-they all need to go ASAP. If you've ever attended a board meeting, it's like Groundhog Day every time, nothing ever gets solved. I don't know what the right answer is because I am thinking about moving out myself. It's very unstable, financially and academically we keep sinking. My newest concern is how The Hub and The Pines(both low income rentals) will add to this mess. The Hub will be part section 8, not sure about The Pines yet. Does Sachem Moms exaggerate and let you see every little fart going on?? Yes, but there are also valid concerns going on right now and you should be concerned in my opinion.

To add to the offensive comments, this is one. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but this is ridiculous. I grew up in Farmingville and had a good childhood. There's nothing wrong with the town or the school. That's a very judgmental thing to say. And as for the "low income rentals", not everyone can afford house prices on long island. Just because a person qualifies for a low income rental doesn't mean they are a bad person or influence.

I don't think she was necessarily speaking about income level- more like the amount of kids that will be entering an already HUGE district.

To the OP- The SD you are comparing to (especially Sayville) are small districts. There are huge differences between a small SD and a very large one. It's not apples to apples

Original poster back....tried to log on from my phone and had to re-activate my account for some reason and it was an old email. Not trying to stir any pot. Just valid concerns I have noticed in Sachem and was wondering if others noticed this. And I was not trying to insult anyone as I know there is good and bad in the district. I was not saying that every family has poor values. I just noticed now that my kids are in school that there really was a difference in what some families value (manners, respect, good grades) opposed to my friends that live in other districts (Sayville, 3V). Not that Sayville and 3V are perfect but I do think you will see a difference in schools and families. I want my kids to be surrounded by a majority of kids that see college and a professional career in their future. With Sachem being in a financial crisis and home values not rising like other areas, I just worry it is going to get worse and my kids will lose out on more. They can't keep taking away extra curricular activities, teachers, raising class sizes and have more low income moving in. The ratings are based on test grades for the person that asked (great schools, school digger). My husband went to Sachem and received his Masters. He had no issues with the school and it was a better district then. But even he has agreed he is a little worried about where Sachem is going and sending our kids to Sachem East. This is all our opinion....I just wanted to see if anyone else had the same worries.

Just to address one of your concerns- I am not sure what town you live in, but I live in the district and my house has gone up in value a TON from when we bought it 12 years ago.
I couldn't afford my house now if I had to buy it today.
Again, it's a big district so that probably comes into play. Not all towns in the district are the same.

Me too, my house is worth 3 times what I paid.

Comparing home sales from 12 years ago really isn't reality and going "rah-rah" that the home you owned for 12 years has increased in value doesn't really mean anything.

EVERY home on Long Island has appreciated in value from 12 years ago and prior, even houses in some of the worst areas of the island.

When this poster says that values in the Sachem area are not rising like other areas, she is 100% accurate. Look at the stats. Somebody earlier mentioned Farmingville as a good example. Farmingville is STILL dropping in value, even lower than the 2010 lows. I'd be real scared if I lived in Farmingville.

http://www.zillow.com/farmingville-ny/home-values/

Other areas like Ronkonkoma and Centereach aren't doing much better.

http://www.zillow.com/ronkonkoma-ny/home-values/

http://www.zillow.com/centereach-ny/home-values/

Then look at someplace like Sayville. They have 100% recovered from the lows of 2010.

Thanks for the insight. I am not as worried about the teachers/class offerings as I am about the parents and values in the community. I truly think some schools are ranked higher because families in that community expect more from their kids (college, good grades, etc). Just worries me when i look online and all the elementary schools are rated a 6 and the surrounding districts are all 8 and 9's. College rate in the 40% range for high school. Hopefully this will improve once they get out of their financial mess.

Wow.

Your entitled to your opinion, but as a parent in the district (granted only a kindergarten child) I find this offensive.

I don't disagree with the OP. The richer areas have a higher college attendance rate. It's in black and white so you can't really argue with statistics. You will find in more blue collar areas, less kids attend college. The richer areas also have the funds for tutors and classes to keep grades higher. All of that said, the richer areas also have better drugs and more Jones. So it's not all rainbows and flowers on the other side either...

The part of her comment I find offensive is the part where she is worried about the parents and family values not the statistics.

She has a valid point.. From what I've seen coming out of that HS we should all be concerned. This last incident with the scavenger hunt list really showed another side of sachem and some of the values of the families here. My daughter is in 3rd grade and girl who is her in class has two parents in jail....that's an issue. My husband wants to leave ASAP. I'm holding onto hope here.

Not to sound rude, but get your facts straight first before making statements like this. There are 2 high schools. East was the one that the kids put their scavenger hunt out public. North did not and did not have things on it like East did. Every school does this and this one just became public.
And why would that be an issue if some other kids' parents are in jail? Teresa Guidice is in jail and her husband next, would you move out of their school district because of that?

I have my facts straight and I am a Sachem PTA member and go to every board meeting they have, do you?? Do you know how bad of a financial crisis we are in?? What the low income housing will do to the area?? 1000 units by Merrimac(one of the best elementary schools we have) is pure insanity. I was at the Islip Town Board meetings fighting them personally. This hits really close to home for me. Listen I get it, no one wants to hear the bad things about their own district. If an area didn't matter, we would all be living in Wyandanch and not worrying about anything because our kids come from good homes. Of course the element of an area matters. Great areas can have bad people, no one is disagreeing. The OP asked an opinion and I gave mine. With all of that said, we have some wonderful teachers, my kids have fabulous friends and they come from excellent families. There is good going on here too.

I was speaking to the OP who combined the 2 high schools into one regarding the scavenger hunt.
I have been in this district for almost 40 years. There has been good and bad the entire time. There is no one "perfect" area or school. Hopefully my kids will be out of the district before all this ever happens and it is not something that keeps me up at night.
I don't need to go to board meetings to know what is going on nor need to be on the Sachem "Morons" site either to know what is going on with the district.

First they were worried about not enough kids and closing schools and now too much. It never ends.

Sachem

I don't have children in Sachem but it is a definitely a decent/good district. Every single district on long island has some sort of problem. It is just exaggerated more in Sachem because it is HUGE. They have some great teacher and programs and excel at sports. Their community outreach is great and they offer a lot of extracurricular sports and programs for typical as well as special needs students. Because they are so big they are able to do these things. Yes there are "bad areas" and yes they have "lower income" areas, but they also have doctors and lawyers living in district and some neighborhoods worth almost as much as the wealthiest districts. The district and few others in the area are in a huge financial crisis but if I'm not mistaken, I thought the state gave Sachem some money last year to help them out. The bottom line is that you need to do what is best for your family, take a look at everything a district has to offer and make an educated decision. Personally, we did not choose to move to Sachem due to the size (looking for a smaller district) and we wanted a better special education program.

I wish it was that easy....just pack up and move. My original question was about the high school and if anyone had kids that attended so I could get their perspective. Elementary school does not worry me....HS does. Didn't want to start a debate. .

Re: Sachem

I don't know anything about Sachem at all. But I see threads like this every few weeks on this board and the home board and the end result is always the same. To the OP this is not the place to find the answers you are looking for. No one on here wants to say - yeah, I live here and raise my kids here and send my kids to the school even though it is god awful. So instead, people get defensive and rationalize to the point it becomes irrational. The strangest thing to me every time with these threads is how posters point out that ALL districts have good and bad - just in different ways - as if ALL districts are created equal? Case in point - you have your poor jail birds in one area and you Teresa Giudice's in the other. Your street drugs in one area and your expensive drugs in the others. Do you all really believe that some school districts are not better than others? Until reading these threads on these boards I thought that was a given! Of course homes in better school districts are more $$ and higher taxes and people pay that because the schools ARE better. That's life. Sorry to the OP but these threads on these boards are not reality based.

Agree....I was just hoping for some honest feedback on the HS, whether it be good or bad. I don't really listen to the "every district has good and bad" talk.

Can't wait for the day when parents take responsibility for their child's upbringing. I am a sachem grad with a masters degree as are most of my friends/family. Many of my friends are successful sachem teachers as well. If your child becomes some hard core criminal, it's bc of YOU, not the school. It is time to stop blaming the schools and communities.
