Sad (maternity leave related)
I am due on June 23. I know I probably won't go the full 40 weeks. I assumed I would be able to work until I go into labor (or close to).
At my 16 week appt tpday, my dr said there is NO WAY I will be working near the end of the pregnancy. I'll be sitting home by myself for weeks watching Judge Judy and the Price is Right. I'll have the kids and BAM----back to work a few weeks later.
DH said he'll have his mom move up to live with us so we don't have to put the kids in daycare. That only made me more upset. (The thought of living w/ MIL......ugh. No freaking way.)
I am so sad. How the heck am I going to go right back to work? I was really counting on having a few months to spend with the kids.
I only get 12 weeks leave and my job is not flexible at all.
Sorry---just needed to vent.

Are you FMLA eligible? I forget how that works.

I think that's the 12wks she's talking about, sounds like she'll have to use some of that before she has her babies. Sorry that stinks, the same thing happened with my first pg, got put on bedrest and used most of my time before I had DD.

Re: Sad (maternity leave related)
I'm sorry to hear, hopefully it works out for you..Maybe you will last at work longer than your dr thinks. It stinks all the work we go through to get pregnant then we have to deal with not getting enough time off work...it's just not fair. But I really hope it works out. Maybe you can look into NYS dis. while out. Oh and i totally understand about living w/ MIL.

Same here - this is the main reason I've been so stressed the past few days of going early - it stinks for all of us. It sickens me the "maternity policies" in this country vs others.

This makes me so upset. There needs to be something done in this country in regard to families. FLMA just doesn't cut it. It is so sad.

FMLA would start when OP is put on bedrest.
You're technically considered disabled for 6 weeks after a vaginal birth and 8 weeks after a c-section. If you run out of FMLA before the end of that b/c of bedrest, maybe your employer can at least work with you and let you stay out during your disability period.

No, FMLA starts the day you go out on bedrest. It totally sucks, but thats the way it is.
I did have to go on bedrest at 31 weeks, but a lot of twin mommies do not. There are plenty who make it all the way to the end with no issues at all. What kind of job do you have? If you have no complications, and as long as you are up to it, you should be able to work until the very end like any other pregnant woman would.

You are actually legally disabled, not technically. You cannot work for 6/8 weeks after birth

You can return to work before then. Most employers will require some type of documentation from your doctor though.

Re: Sad (maternity leave related)
From what I remember (DD is almost 12), as soon as my Doctor took me out of work, disability started. Then I got my 6 weeks once she was born. If the Doctor tells you to stop working with a note, then it should cover it all.
This time around, I have a back up disability insurance too. (AFLAC)
I'm due on May 9th and am thinking my last day at work will be either April 23rd or the 30th. We'll see what the time brings.
I agree with everyone though.. the maternity leave policies in this country really suck compared to Europe & Canada!! It's sad!
As far as your MIL living with you.. that would not fly with me!! Oh no!! I am getting prices for day care now. I got $330/week and then another place was $56/day. It's up there but, I'd rather pay that then live with my MIL. If she lived close by, that would be different but bringing another person into the house the same time you are bringing the babies home is an added stress you definitely won't need. Time to talk to your DH.
Good luck! I hope it all works out for you.

Re: Sad (maternity leave related)
Thanks everyone for replying.
I'm going to call HR today to see if I have any options.
I commute from Huntington into Brooklyn every day and work in higher education. Mostly a desk job, but the commute is kind of rough.
