SAHM and financial decisions
If your SO is the one who works outside the home do you think it's OK for them to make financial decisions without consulting with the other person?? Oh say for example....buying a car or a very expensive "toy", just because "they make the money".... Granted the car thing was kinda for his business, but it happened back in August and I never knew about it.

Oh -- do you mean like the 28 foot boat that I have sitting on my driveway? We SO have the same issues.

definitely NOT! What if there was a situation where the money he spent was needed at home and *POOF* you didn't have it because he bought that "toy"????

Are you kidding me? NO WAY! I'd be so mad. That shows absolutely no respect for the fact that you are a team.

Re: SAHM and financial decisions
Yeah, I'm not happy.... he actually started to laugh because he said that "I could've sworn I told you" - I said I don't think you should be laughing and I left, I couldn't even talk to him about it I was sooo furious! This isn't the first time either....
ETA - I think the biggest thing is the honesty factor, now I feel like he was hiding something, you know!

Re: SAHM and financial decisions
Sorry Jenn but when Derek buys something I always say "you make the money, You'll just have to work harder hence the vacation home, quad and 5 cars in a house of 2 people BUT in his defense he always tells me before buying anything over $1000. I would be mad too if something $$$ appeared outta nowhere!

That's the thing, he didn't even mention it to me! I totally felt like he hid it and I hate it! Plus, I've been trying to get us to SAVE more, and he keeps saying save what.....hmmmm perhaps the money you just spent on that friggin car!

Re: SAHM and financial decisions
It was just some used SUV, I was so mad I don't think I heard what kind. It's been sitting at the shop supposedly but he has a ton of cars just sitting there. ETA - he just bought his brand new truck and theat huge 5th wheel camper a couple months ago....and I wasn't even consulted about that till it was pulling in the driveway!

Re: SAHM and financial decisions
Just because you are a SAHM does not mean that you are less of a partner in the marriage. And just because I am a working mom does not mean I am more of a partner in my marriage. Marriage is not about the actual money, but sharing decisions about our future together. Some of those decisions are financial ones. Would he think it was okay for you to make ALL decisions about how to raise your children...so whether he agrees or not has no bearing? Of course not. It used to be that way but now I think most couples have grown to consider marriage more than the man=money, women=children.

I would be furious!!! It's a total lack of respect when they don't consult!!! You are a team in all aspects of your life together!!! Just my opinion!!

Re: SAHM and financial decisions
I wouldn;t tolerate it for a minute. Just because the IRS has no record of a salary for me on file doesn't mean I am not working just as hard.

Re: SAHM and financial decisions
I would be so mad Even thoguh I a m a working mom that doesn't mean that I hav more rights to make financial choices then you do. IT was a choice that both of you made that you would be a SAHM. So then the financials should be discussed between the two of you. As well as anything else. Just like Michele31 said would he like it i f you made all the choices about how to raise your children without consulting him or giving him any type of input no he wouldn't like it but maybe you need to do something like that to show him how it feels to be left out of the loop.
So sorry your going through this

Re: SAHM and financial decisions
No I think big purchases definitely need to be a joint decison. I am having a hard time adjusting to not briging money in though. I feel like I have no say and no right to spend money (this is self inflicted though, nothing DH says or does). This is the first time in my life I have not had my "own" money.
