SAHM's who are planning to go back to work when DC is in school full time
What the heck do you do with the kids while they are on summer vacation??? I mean, I am a SAHM and have been since the day DS was born. I would find it weird to do day care when he is 5 years old for the summer. I dont have any family close by. DH and I are so lost about this.

Re: SAHM's who are planning to go back to work when DC is in school full time
Our school district offers full day camp, then they bus to after care at the YMCA. Then the Y has 3 week sessions which I can sign them up for.
Plus DH and I both get a few weeks vacation, so we can plan that around their time off.
Any extra days here and there I can get a sitter, or my inlaws will hopefully take them.
We'll figure it out I guess. I'm a little worried too.

Re: SAHM's who are planning to go back to work when DC is in school full time
I work part-time and as a consultant, have very, very flexible hours. I work only while they are in school, I leave work when I need to pick them up, etc. I am off the weeks they are off.
As far as summer, I pretty much take the summer off with them, but my DH is also off one day during the week, so I will head into the office the day he is home with the kids. So at least I am there a little.
I also have my kids in a summer recreation program, which is awesome since the park is right next to my office complex. so there are a few weeks they will take summer rec and I can get a few office hours in.
Most moms who work PT like me either have a sitter for their kids in the summer or have them in full day camps.

I will be counting days till summer, to do stuff with DS all day. Parks, museums, you name it. Any opportunity I can get to teach and explore with him, until he says "mom, your embarrassing me, I don't want to go with you"
Maybe I'm naive, DS is only 15m, but I really think this is how its going to be.

Re: SAHM's who are planning to go back to work when DC is in school full time
This is something that I have been worrying about. My parents are local but my father works full time still and my mom just retired but has indicated she will NOT be a regular babysitter service... so I know I will have to figure something out.
When you start back I would assume additionally you won't have very much vacation time. I would plan to put them in camp - but that does not cover the entire summer. For those who started back the 1st year - did you end up taking all your vacation time for sick days before even having to worry about summer time and school holidays? My girls would be 5 and 7 by that time.

I know many SAHM's who children are in camp (even the camp my kids go to). Some all day and some half day. Most just a few weeks in the summer as you do run out of things (and money) to do with them.

as of right now, I plan to look for something within the school system (teachers assistant or office) so that I will be off with my kids for all school vacations & summers. I can not see sending my kids to camp (nothing against thise that do it but it is not for DH & I)

Your children are young though so you might see the advantage later on as I think it is a great social thing for the kids. Even my SAHM friends have their kids in camp when they really don't "need" to have them there. I went to a full day camp a few weeks in the summer too and my mom was a SAHM.

working for the schools make things like this much easier. Things are tough right now (even aide positions), but in a few years it should bounce back.

It has nothing to do with not wanting the kids to have a "social" network but we have a summer house up in Maine. When I was a kid, my dad use to take us up there at the end of the school year & he would spend his "vacation" weeks with us & then come back to NY to work. We would be there from the end of June until Labor day weekend. I want the same for my kids especially considering my entire family & their cousins all live up there.
Not sure how it will all work out in a couple years with our kids. I hope that they can share the same experience that I did. I had friends here & in Maine that did the "camp" thing & loved it. Just not something I truly ever liked & now as a parent truly not fond of.

Oh, that sounds great. I am sure the kids would love that. Can I ask why you are not fond of summer camps? I just ask because I have been using them for 8 years.
