Salary Range?
I know you shouldn't discuss salary probably until a position is offered. But I applied for a job I am really interested in through the company website. The HR manager for this position e-mailed me directly that they would like to know my salary range before moving forward.
I have worked with employment recruiters that have said never mention a number; say I'm interested in the opportunity and the company, and would be “open to a fair and competitive offer.”
Should that be my response; or just give them a range within $5K above/below of what I have researched as fair for the position. Don't want to say a number that they might feel is too high and out of the budget that they don't even want to interview me.

Look, the truth is that they don't want to waste either of your time. If you're $5k off, then that's not an issue. But what if you want $100k and their budget is $50k. You'll never align. So you might as well tell them what you want to make.

Salary Range?
Thanks, I ended up asking THEM if they had a salary range, her response was about 20k lower than my current pay. I politely said I wasn't able to take anything lower than my current salary. We exchanged a few other emails amd she said they could come higher where I need if it's the right fit.
That seems SO odd to me that we would be discussing salary like this before I even have a 1st interview? ?

Re: Salary Range?
Its better to discuss salary ranges so neither you or they waste time on a 1st interview if both parties have completely different expectations of what salary the position really pays.
I would say you are in a salary of (X+5K - X + 30K) X being your current salary - and take it from there. If they can stay in that range or beat it, then its worth the time. If not, tell them to take a hike.

Not odd at all. That's why HR typically has a prescreen and either asks your current salary or your expected salary.

Yes imagine how annoyed you would be if your took off a day from work, interviewed and then found out the job paid $20k lower??

Salary Range?
Thanks so much!! It turned out their salary range was $15k LESS than what I currently make so it was good to get that out. I was able to get them open to increasing the salary and continued with the interview process. It's a great job, close to home which is important and much more flexible than my current job. If I get offered the position I hope they can at least match my salary!

Salary Range?
The interview went really well! It was last week and they told me I would hear back from them by this week. I got an e-mail yesterday confirming my salary. Hopefully they are able to come in with what I am looking for.
I did try to be as open as possible and say it was all considering overall compensation and benefits.

This happened to me also. I told them what I was making and they ask me how much lower I could go. I told them I will take 5k lower bc the benefits were better than my current ones. She then called me and asked my if I will accept lower than that bc The hiring manager really liked my resume. I politely told her no. She requested an interview anyways. I went to the interview and they asked me a million time if I will like this type of job. A week later I got a rejection email. Hope you get a better experience than I did.!

Oh no! I don't know why they insisted you interview if they knew they couldn't offer you the salary you wanted.
I'm nervous that perhaps this job would prefer a candidate that is equally qualified as me (or more) but they can pay a lower rate.

I got the job!!
So NOW I have to find out what they are offering. They have my range (my absolute lowest #); hopefully they come in a little higher which would be great!
