Saline nose spray and babies... How to??

So the ped said to spray some saline up Alexas nose and then suction it with teh bulb syringe... Oh YAY Chat Icon Chat Icon

She COMPLETELY flips out when I suction her nose... she didn't even cry when they put in the IV but suction her nose and its like we are stabbing her with a knife.

So how the heck and I suppose to spray saline in her nose and suction it...

Will this even work with a squirming screamin 10 month old??

Any advice would be great...We have to get this snot out of her nose because its draining into her lungs and she's at risk for pneumonia..

the best way i've found to do it is to: (btw - TWO person job)

put her on a changing table & lay her down
get a FAVORITE toy
jiggle favorite toy over her head - near her forehead - so you catch her looking up there
while she's focused on the toy - get what you can up and in there - drops and then wait.

the drops will likely cause her to sneeze (ALWAYS does with Em). if not - repeat with same toy or a new toy and suction.

Re: Saline nose spray and babies... How to??

Oh Maria I think they ALL hate it!!!

First off, a tip from Porrruss get the Bebe sounds BATTERY aspirator, I think she said it;s 19.99 at RIte aid!!!!

The spray is very very very good, it really breaks the gunk up. I used to try to "force" the nozzle in, but he haaaaaaated it. Now I stay about an inch away from his nose, and get both nostrils by waving it back and forth, its MUCH easier, and less traumatic, though he still wriggles!!! I do it while I'm changing him, and I have the belt buckled to keep him safe. Often I'll have to lay my forearm (gently) over his chest to stop the flailing. He still turns his head from side to side, so it's definitely a contest!!!! Good luck!!!

Re: Saline nose spray and babies... How to??

Chat Icon DS hates being squeegeed too. I lay him down, (DH had to help hold arms). Just drop 1 drop right into each nostril, don't spray it up there, it will be too much. She will probably cry and squirm away after you do it. Then use the aspirator to take everything out.

She will hate you while you are doing it, but she will be able to breathe better soon. Key is to have DH help be the bad guy too.

It will work on a 10 month old, we had to do it to a 2 month old (which he still hated)

All good tips but just in case you weren't aware...

to suction, you have to hold down the other nostril while suctioning the one you want.

DS hates it too. We lay him on our lap and hold his head in our arm. Then spray. Then we use the nasal aspirator. We just got that Graco battery operated one and it works great and is quicker (and easier for me). Good luck!

DD had a cold last week and I just held her arms down, put it up her nose and sprayed. She screamed like I was trying to kill her, but it worked. (the saline)

DS caught my cold and I have been giving him the drops. He is 7 weeks old and he hates it. He cries so hard. The drops make him lose his breath. I feel so bad....Chat Icon

I hold my kids down. Yes-they get upset but you need to do it. I lay them on the changing table, clasp their hands together and lean my forearm over their chest while holding their chin with that hand. Do it as quickly as possible.Chat Icon

Re: Saline nose spray and babies... How to??

I really don't have help from DH thoughout the week....so what works for me is to wrap his towels around the front of him pull it tight in the back so he can't get his hands to his face then lay him on the changing table and clip the stap (if you have one..if not just lean over her.) that way you don't have to have three hands Chat Icon He hates it but it needs to be done...

Good Luck....

DS is 3 months old. We have been doing it with her for the past few weeks b/c she has a cold. I do it myself usually. She hates it and cries and holds her breathe too but honestly once I am done and she realizes she can breathe so much better she is fine...it is sad to see them cry though.

No tips. You just have to bite the bullet and do it. Liam screams and yells but, it helps. I have one person hold him down and I just do it.

Glad to hear that she is home. I missed that update!Chat Icon

I hold ds down but lately i have been having him "help" me by putting his hands over the bulb to pull. It has been working a little. After he does it we all say "yay" and clap hands :) But usually I have to hold him down. I have also been doing it in the high chair and putting the high chair back so atleast he is held down.

DD reacts better to the Little Noses saline mist instead of the drops.

Re: Saline nose spray and babies... How to??

I did this CONSTANTLY two weeks ago...

I just had her sitting up on the changing table, and squirted up her nose while she was sitting up, then did the aspirator.

I had her face one way-- and then I sorta reached around her, like I was hugging her to keep her still-- then went for it using my right hand.

After days of this, she let me do it no problem.
