Re: Salma Hayek Provides Breastfeeding Services
I hope she found out medically it was okay to do that. I mean they have breast milk dononations etc. but it's used after the milk is screened etc. I find it a nice gesture but what if she had meds or other things that could of been passed through her milk that could of put that baby's life at risk.

Maybe I'm missing something.. but how is that "gift" to the child..?
She breastfed this kid ONE TIME?
Am I missing something? I don't think one feeding of breast milk is doing all that much.
I just don't get it..
I look at it as it is one more day this baby gets to live
Why not just bring them a supply of formula.. I'm not saying it wasn't nice of her..
But I don't think breastmilk is the ONLY way she could help this baby.

I think it's awesome too.
I don't know how breastfeeding another infant puts her life or her daughter's at risk?
It did mention her daughter was weaned already.
I also think it was a wonderful thing to do. how would it put anyone's life at risk? no different than what wet nurses used to to before there was formula
What if the baby had thrush or other infections that she could of gotten? I bf my children and I had gotten thrush once from my child.

She seemed very sincere, like it was just a quick instinct reaction to want to feed this baby...like there was no question she'd want to help this baby. And if you watch her rubbing that baby's hand, that says it all too.
I think she's great

Am I the only one who really didn't flinch at this at all? I'm wondering if something is wrong with me that I don't think this is weird at all!
You're not the only one
If I was there, and there was a starving baby, I would definitely feed him/her, immediately. Heck, I'd feed two or three

The doctors in that region are trying to show women they need to breastfeed. Many women wean when the baby is just a few months old and lots of babies starve to death because of it.

Me as well. I think it's amazing. Women for thousands of years have been feeding eachothers children. Nothing strange or gross about that. Just human

Re: Salma Hayek Provides Breastfeeding Services
It doesn't gross me out at all..I think it was a nice gesture ..
However..I felt badly knowing that the baby had ONE session of being nursed, now what??
I mean, I'm wondering how this kid has been fed for the last few weeks and how he'll continue to be fed. If he is starving and has nothing...that one session seems like a tease to me (not that I think it was WRONG of her, I just don't understand what happens next...hopefully he has formula nourishment...).
The video with the other starving kids was heartbreaking. I can't take it. We live in a country where we waste so much and these children are starving...

to me, that is partly the beauty of it. she discounted ANYTHING that could happen to HER, and gave life-saving nourishment to a child.
she is not putting her own child in danger.
can she move to sierra leone to become a wet nurse? no. should she adopt that little child and take it away from it's mother? no.
I hope (and imagine) that they didn't go to this town to give false hope, and that arrangements have been made to instruct women on the benefits of breast milk, and also formula has been made available.
but nothing can take away from what she did.

There's no exchange of bodily fluids when you breast feed. Milk comes out of the breast, but nothing goes in. Unless Salma had an open cut on or near her nipple there is no risk to her. However, the baby might be at risk of getting something from her.

Ummm.. there were some pictures of her smoking recently. If she's smoking, I think donating a bottle of formula would have been a nicer gesture.

Thanks for the explanation! Yeah I guess I was just thinking of any open wounds and then possibly passing on something to her own child if she decides to breast feed again. If it is totally safe, then it was a great gesture.

I have to imagine that if you didn't live in LI...and maybe lived, say in, oh, maybe...Sierra Leone, where children DIE every day due to starvation, that you may change your tune.
but maybe I'll just google search how many CVS's they have there...b/c of course, it could have been an option for these mothers to hop in their SUV's and drive over there...but figured they'd wait for Salma to swing on down for a visit instead.

I agree, these people live a VERY different life, they watch their children starve to death on a daily basis...I just cannot see how someone giving a baby nourishment that he desperatly needs can be seen as anything other than selfless and amazing

my friend just came back after living in sierra leone for a year. this is a country were the streets are a toilet. trust that there is no CVS and that getting clean water to mix is hard to come by.
my friend lived under the protection of the UN, in UN housing and still came back looking ill because she lived on rice.
to go back on topic - i think that what she did was wonderful

Re: Salma Hayek Provides Breastfeeding Services
I think it was a great gesture - while she only bf this baby once, she was trying to assist in educating the women of this area on the benefits of BFing. Hopefully, that will bring long tern benefits to the children. Wet nurses were used big time in Italy when my dad was growing up - my grandmother and father talk about how it was no big deal - there was no issue about the "sterilization" of the milk. My grandmother said noone died from "bad" milk.
