saver/spender?

do you save by any means necessary, ie, coffee from home, lunch from home, what have you. or do you spend what you have until you have no more?

i try to watch my money, i started bringing coffee from home, 4 out of 5 days i bring my lunch. i willl splurge every now and then, but not too crazy. fh can go to work with $5 in his pocket and come home with $4.50. i have no idea how he does it.

how are your spending habits different?

That's me! I could leave my house Monday morning with a $20 and Friday afternoon I still have that $20!

I just don't really go out at night during the week and I don't drink coffee. I prefer to bring my lunch. I'll buy lunch a couple of times per month. It also helps that my office complex doesn't have vending machines and the cafeteria is down the hill (not walking up a hill when it's hot!) and I can't be bothered to drive somewhere just to get lunch.

Re: saver/spender?

We bring lunch from home and now that things have calmed down here (mom out of hospital, brother's wedding is over), we can start having dinner home more too. I would say I am a spender BUT its on things for the house mostly. We have been very good at saving our change, cashing it in and depositing into our account that we try not to touch at all.

ETA: I always have breakfast at home during the week as well.

Re: saver/spender?

I'm a spender, he is a saver. But he is trying to convert he to his evil ways Chat Icon . But I have been trying. I am learning that the little things I was spending on foolishly can add up to more expensive things that I would rather do with him or for us (house wise). So I am learning I really do need to be a saver.

Re: saver/spender?

We are both more savers, but DH is REALLY a saver. I do bring lunch and coffee from home most days, but I do buy lunch maybe once a week. For me, it is about whether or not I am organized and plan it out ahead. DH always makes sure he has stuff to make his lunch for the week ahead.

I also spend more on myself than he does. I spend more on clothes and getting my hair done, etc. He only buys what he needs, where I will treat myself occasionally.

DH and I are more savers than spenders, but that's because we're saving for a house.

once that does happen (if it EVER DOES!), we're going to be so broke. Chat Icon

i hear what you all are saying. i just feel like some people take it to the extreme. just b/c i'm getting married that does not mean i can't spent $1.47 on coffee a day. i know that little expenses add up...but come on. i can't live on $20 for a month.

Re: saver/spender?

We are both spenders and I don't ever see that changing. But we both work very hard for our money and we like to enjoy it. We don't have a house yet, but we really aren't in any big rush to get one. I guess when we do get serious about buying a house we will be forced to curb our habits, but for now we are enjoying ourselves!!

You have to do what works for you and what fits your lifestyle, as long as you can afford it.

Not to sound preachy, but I was buying coffee everyday from 7-11 on the way to work. After hurricane Katrina, I decided to put that money, and what I spent on a Saturday morning at Panera aside every day for a few months, and then sent it in as a donation. I was surprised at how quickly it added up, and then since I got in the habit of bringing the coffee from home, it was easy to keep doing it.

I also think there are people who are VERY thrifty and unfairly judge people who don't do what they do. I find it hard to understand how some people live beyond their means, but it's their choice to make. I have enough of my own stuff to worry about without trying to run other people's lives and budgets.Chat Icon

i don't think you are preachy, you make a good point. i agree with the above, its very do as i say b/c i know best. i hate that b/c i hate having to explain myself on certain things. i bring coffee from home and i notice the difference in my wallet. so i know its a good thing, but i don't want to always live like this.

Ditto !!!

We pay our expenses and have a set amount of $$ that we save a month and then the money leftover is for whatever else comes up. We both also have a set amount of $$$$.....of $100 a week each for lunch, gas for the cars, or however we choose to use it. I never bring breakfast/lunch to work and I could probably save a lot considering how expensive food is in the city but I just find that I'm not sure what I'd like to eat next day. I commend those that bring lunch every day because it means you plan ahead of time and accordingly. I think everyone's budgets and priorities are different so what works for one person may not for the other.

Re: saver/spender?

HA! This is a good one, I like this thread Chat Icon

I am a terrible spender, it's a very bad habit which is very difficult for me to overcome. My DH on the other hand is VERY VERY good at saving money, he always manages to put a nice chunck of change away each week.

Re: saver/spender?

I'm more of a saver, but I don't deprive myself. I usually bring my lunch half the time, go out with friends the other half. DH goes out to eat every day and is more of a spender. Even if he brings lunch he just eats twice and buys a lunch too, so that didn't help. We eat in most nights, but this week I have met up with friends for dinner every single night with a wedding on friday. busy week!

I shop a lot, but I look for good sales so I really don't spend that much.

I think it will change if we ever need more money, but for right now we are more than able to pay our mortgage and still save over a thousand a month, so we don't really feel like we have to cut costs.

I used to be more of a saver, but I definitely wasn't as much fun! Now we splurge and go on at least one big vacation a year.

Dh is the same way. He brings coffee and his lunch to work. I usually bake something for him for breakfast as well. He never spends money during the week at work. I have to force him to take $10 just so he has money in his pocket. I am a SAHM so I don't spend money during the week unless I meet some other moms for lunch. Otherwise, I am home for lunch and eat whatever is in the house.

When it comes to groceries for the house I buy in bulk when its on sale and I splurge on things like Veal Chops, crab meat and Lamb at Costco.

I think I am fairly responsible with money and I always try to buy on sale unless it is something I have to have then I just buy it. DH is the saver and I am alittle of both.
