Re: Savings Bond question
I don't think so. When I cashed mine in from birth there were a few that didn't have my SS number on them and it was fine.

Re: Savings Bond question
with the way the economy is they are worth nothing now..
you come to a party with 4 people and give me a 100 bond, I rather you insult me anyway and give me a 50$ check...
rather then take 18 years for the bond mature..
THANK GOD Sofia only got a few of these..

Re: Savings Bond question
DS got a few bonds for his Baptism. They do kind of $uck bc they take so long to mature...I took some of his cash and invested it...I'm sure he'll get a lot more out of the cash than the bonds...I wonder why people get them?

Re: Savings Bond question
Not happy about all the bonds either, but the way I see it, at least Gavin will have the $100 bucks eventually rather than the $50 he got from a family of 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY should have gotten the $100 bond to make themselves look better.
My mom bought Gavin Hershey and McDonalds stocks......DH better eat!!!!

Re: Savings Bond question
DS got some savings bonds and some cash for his baptism. The cash we're putting his 529 plan and the bonds will go in our safe deposit box until they mature.

So you would really not want someone close enough to you to get an invite, to come to your wedding if they can't afford to cover their plate for it?
I personally like bonds and think they are a great gift. Of course I'm the type that feels a gift is a gift, it doesn't need to be a certain amount to appease me (or my kids). I like knowing that they will be worth something years down the road when my kids want to buy a car, or pay for some of their college. I had bonds growing up and was very excited to be able to cash them in and have some money for my first car.

Re: Savings Bond question
I hate bonds for 1 reason. I can invest your $50 much better and earn more interest on that same $50 bucks than a bond can EVER DO in 18 years. Not to mention what inflation does to the face value of a bond, the same basket of goods for $50 bucks now, is not the same basket of goods for $50 bucks 18 years from now.
You can earn more interest with a high yield savings acct or CD.
My DH still has bonds he got from his Bar mitzfah!

Re: Savings Bond question
I loved having savings bonds!
I cashed them in when I was 18 and used the money towards a car (and some of them didn't have my SSN on them).
I personally give them so that the money can't be used to pay for a pricey party that the parents chose to throw- and instead will be used for something the kid wants when she/he is old enough to want something of importance.
(PS- I know several sets of parents who throw their kids huge parties when they are too young to even enjoy them (like 1st and baptism) and justify the cost by saying "they will make it all back in gifts" IMHO- this is wrong- the gifts should be for the child- not to pay the bills.)

Uh I had a huge party for her christening bc that is how WE do things and I didn't justify costs, all of her gifts went into an account for her.. Who said anything about paying bills with the money.. are you EVEN reading the post?

Whoa!!! Did I not say a the end of my post that I felt this way because of people I know in my own personal life? I wasn't putting anyone down on here...if you have the means to throw a big party- by all means-do it. I was speaking about parents that use their child's cash gifts for their own benefit. I didn't mean to offend anyone, and there's no need to get defensive.

Re: Savings Bond question
I give bonds to my inlaws who are terrible with money...I don't even send them the actual bond, just the paper saying one was purchased.
I use the kids ssn, if its a new baby, I will use their sibling's ssn...we never use ours, I never want them to have that info on us.
