Re: Savings Bond question
Wow!!
I can't believe how a simple question of changing the SS# changed - giving or not giving and what people do with their money
But to answer the question - you do not have to change it - it is fine the way it is

Re: Savings Bond question
OK - I think a Christening is about celebrating the rite with your child and family - not about gifts. If you invite people and chose to have a fancy to-do, that is your perogative - but the gifts are for your child, not your catering bill.
That being said - I think bonds are not great investment-wise. However, what if you put everything into a 529 and the kid decides not to go to college? That's kind of a waste. And if you buy stock - who says it won't flop?
I have adult nieces and nephews and all are glad they had bonds to cash in when they finished college.
And it doesn't matter whose SS# is on them.

Re: Savings Bond question
They take so long to mature, which is one sucky part. Then, when you cash them in, you need to pay taxes on them.

Re: Savings Bond question
I hate bonds for 1 reason. I can invest your $50 much better and earn more interest on that same $50 bucks than a bond can EVER DO in 18 years.
I agree with this! DS got a bunch of bonds for his christening and I was considering cashing them in and investing them where I would get much more of a return.

with the way the economy is they are worth nothing now..
you come to a party with 4 people and give me a 100 bond, I rather you insult me anyway and give me a 50$ check...
rather then take 18 years for the bond mature..
THANK GOD Sofia only got a few of these..
glad I didn't give her one lmao

In regard to Federal EE Savings bonds, yes, you have to pay federal income tax on the interest earned on the bonds when you redeem them unless they they qualify for special tax benefits under the Educational Savings Bond program.
Any bonds issued now through 4/2008 are at a fixed interest rate of 3%.
