Saw a horrific accident on my way in today and question for those who take the LIRR?
Was on Sunrise Hwy wesrbound this am, when a jeep in the left lane hit a small patch of snow, spun onto the grassy median (which is concave for some reason that I don't quite understand) continued to spin/skid onto the other side of sunrise highway (eastbound) stopping just short of the woods. Not sure if he did hit anything, but I know that most were able to stop in time. Scared the living you-know-what out of me since my car does not drive good at all in this weather! Which brings me to my question...
Since my car does not drive well in even an inch of snow, I was considering taking the LIRR when it snows so I don't have to miss work. Since I don't take the train often (or at all in the past 8 years), how do the trains typically run during snow like this? Is it safer than being on the roads? I work 30 miles from where I live. Thanks for the info!

There can be delays, but snow like this isn't really bad for the LIRR. My train wasn't delayed at all this AM and I haven't had many problems this year.
I think it's definitely safer than driving.

And he was in a Jeep! Scary! Hence why I HATE snow!! There are NO redeeming qualities of snow.
As far as the LIRR goes- you are much safer on a train in this weather than in a car...for sure!

I think that's the way to go then. I may have to wake up a bit earlier, but it'll definitely be worth it! I spun out myself after seeing that accident and burst into tears because I was already shell-shocked from seeing that happen!
Snow only had value when we were kids and school would get cancelled! Snow stinks as an adult...unless you are lucky enough to work in a school, of course!

Depends which branch you are on. I know the Babylon branch hardly EVER has delays. I think the trains that run out east more have delays.

The only time I remember a significant problem is when we had that awful ice storm. The ice built up on the rails and they halted the schedule for a bit. That was one day in a a million that I used the LIRR though.
I think it is a good call, and always better than sitting in traffic
