saw this on facebook about the holocaust

and its just sad...

I remember having a survivor visit us in school, feeling his arm and the skin with the blurry tattoo and thinking its so soft and he's so nice... Why....

Think it was middle school or maybe my freshman year.

Wow. Thank you for posting. My FIL runs the memorial library and teaches about the holocaust as a volunteer.

I agree. I had no idea the holocaust wasn't part of every school's curriculum. That's kind of scary, this was a HUGE event in history, how does one gloss over it?? Chat Icon

Re: saw this on facebook about the holocaust

How sad and frightening. With very few survivors left to give first-hand accounts, it is so incredibly important that our children are educated about the Holocaust. They need the knowledge in order to fight the deniers (and there are many), and also so that we can make sure that this never happens again. Never Forget.

My grandfather (a survivor) is turning over in his grave right now. How shameful Chat Icon I'm thankful I learned about the Holocaust not only in school but from my own relatives' first-hand accounts, which have been recorded through the Speilberg project so that my children and grandchildren can hear directly from their ancestors about what they experienced.

My grandma is a survivor. She goes to schools across Long Island to speak about her experiences during the Holocaust. It saddens me deeply that these students are not similarly taught about the Holocaust.

My former mother-in-law is a survivor of Auschwitz. She's still alive. She never really liked to talk about it. I've caught her during times where she's opened up to me and told me stories (usually during long car rides). She was 13 years-old when she lost her entire family except for one distant relative who now lives in Paris. My father-in-law, also a survivor, but now deceased never ever spoke about it. We do have photographs of them right after they were liberated. Very hard to look at them though.

I'm not surprised since there are people out there who actually believe that it was a hoax. So flipping ridiculous. How people come up with this nonsense, I will never know or understand.

My grandmother, before she had Alzheimer's, wouldn't speak about it ever. My grandfather thought it was extremely important for us to know their stories so he told us his and my grandmother's, and he recorded both of them so that we would have them forever. It must have been so hard for him but he answered every single question we ever asked. Now my poor grandmother relives it from time to time and it's absolutely horrifying to watch her go through it again Chat Icon

This! And the companies that write the text books tend to gloss over all of the "controversial" or potentially offensive topics bc they want to sell text books to as many different demographics as they can...it's disgusting how much they water down history (and I think it's only going to get worse with the Common Core curriculum).

When I was a sub in a middle school, I had the opportunity to chaperone a 7th grade trip to Boston. We walked the freedom trail and ended at the holocaust memorial. Not only did the memorial move a group of 7th graders to silence and tears, but there was also a survivor who happened to be there, that the kids got to meet. If was an experience that I'm sure changed all of our lives!

WWII and the Holocaust are a vital part of World and United States History and I'm really shocked that college students don't know the answer to these questions. I'm scared about the future of education in this country. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

That is so sad and heartbreaking for your grandma and you and your family. Chat Icon

I've told most of the stories she's told me to my son (some I feel he's too young to know as they were very degrading to my MIL) so he never forgets. My ex-husband doesn't even know half the things his mom has gone through, as she's told me more than she's told her own children.

It made me feel so disgusted.. I may not teach my child about god the way others do but I won't neglect to teach her about history, facts and even the ugly facts.

That is so sad, disturbing, frightening, you name it.

My grandfather lost his parents, sisters and neices, not to mention aunts, uncles and cousins, in the Holocaust. He watched the Nazis throw his baby neice against the wall. He and his 2 brothers only survived because his mother had the foresight to make them run away before they were taken to a concentration camp. None survived and he doesn't even know where they were killed. Completely heartbreaking. Devastating.

To think that people in our country - and ones attending an Ivy! - don't know about these stories of survival and death angers me. There are very few survivors left in the world and their stories need to live on so that we Never Forget.

How awful. My uncle's father was a survivor and had the numbers on his arm. He was in one of the concentration camps with his family. He and another little boy escaped together and hid in the woods, sneaking back at night to steal food to survive. Their families were killed and they were the only survivors. I can't believe schools would leave this out of their text books.

Welcome to Common Core where they don't teach about the Holocaust but will ask question about infidelity to teach reading. What a crock of shit.

I'm actually pretty surprised by this. I teach in a long island public high school. The majority of my 10th grade students have basic knowledge of the Holocaust. I teach Elie Wiesel's Night and we talk briefly about WWII before reading. Students definitely know which group was targeted during the Holocaust and can name Hitler as leader of Germany. Most of them are even accurate with the date.
I am more surprised by the footage because I know the topic is still being taught in most long island public schools.
Students are very sensitive to the material in Night (which is Elie's Wiesel's experience at Auschwitz and other camps as a teenager). They never complain about reading it and are moved by his experience.

I do think it's shameful but not surprising- after all, there are some states that refuse to teach evolution in science class.

But I also think it's important to note that this is probably reflects school/district decisions- I bet most kids who grew up in the NY metro area have been/are taught about the Holocaust- I was, more than once- but if you go to less diverse parts of the country- maybe Idaho, Wyoming, a lot of the South- it's not happening.

I also don't think it's fair to blame Common Core- I admit I have my issues with the standards but they do have pretty inclusive reading lists (which they point out are not exhaustive) which include The Diary of Anne Frank, The Book Thief, and writings of Elie Wiesel.

if you saw it completely she said it was to target PA not NY.. and she names NY as one of 5 who mandate the topic for education and further specifically names long island pushed it through in 1994

Re: saw this on facebook about the holocaust

That's so sad that all states don't learn about genocide. There were so many genocides (Holocaust, Rwanda, Armenia, etc ) and hey really need to be taught. No group needs to be treated like that.

There was one fact she had wrong. She nodded the student who said the Holocaust started in 1941, and that is just wrong. It started in earlier, 1933 or 1938 or so. It's disputed.

Yep. Towards the end if the article it lists NY as one of the states that has mandated that the Holocaust be taught. But I can't believe that only 5 states have such a mandate!!! It's sad that more states don't mandate it...if I were a parent in a state like PA that apparently doesn't teach it, I'd be pushing for a change!!!

which parts? so curious about the infamous 'south' when people say this.

I know we do here in Texas and specifically San Antonio.. and I know my friends in Houston and Dallas were also appauled. More specifically the first guy is wearing a UTSA shirt (university of texas san antonio) and there is some rage about that representation on my facebook wall. We all hope it was borrowed because in a city of diverse culture that we have, it is not a good example of our education.

More importantly.. the video itself ASKED where some of them were educated and it was 'up north' if you will. or 'out east'

I think its not an east, west, north or south issue. I think its a public school thing, period. Each district can choose its own.

Texas is one of 9 states that does not follow the common core mandate however there is a district in San Antonio who chooses to do so anyway. Just one district out of all in our town.

I don't think this is common core as an issue either. I think we as parents NEED to be more invovled in our children's education.
