saw this on facebook about the holocaust
OMG! I just read this and so many words come to mind. This is absolutely disgusting and horrific! As a high school history teacher here on LI, I am appalled, but unfortunately not shocked.
Many students of this generation are so preoccupied with technology, social media, and materialistic possessions that learning history (or any other academic subject) is given low priority. Had you asked them who Miley Cyrus was dating, or something about the Kardashian family, I am sure most would have been able to answer. Sad. This problem is unfortunately not just concentrated on college campuses like the article above shows. Recent studies indicate that 38% of Americans would FAIL a U.S. Citizenship test and when asked to name a country that starts with the letter "U", few could name one. There are many countries throughout the world that start with "U" but how about our country, the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?
I could write a book on what I think is wrong with this current generation. Just the other day, I handed back essays in class and 3 students came up to me and said they couldn't read my comments. I will preface this by saying I have incredibly neat handwriting. I asked if it was too messy for them -- they said "No, I can't read it because its written in script". I wanted to die (and kill them, simultaneously!)

There are parts of the south the will not teach about the Holocaust as they don't believe it happened.
which parts? so curious about the infamous 'south' when people say this.
I know we do here in Texas and specifically San Antonio.. and I know my friends in Houston and Dallas were also appauled. More specifically the first guy is wearing a UTSA shirt (university of texas san antonio) and there is some rage about that representation on my facebook wall. We all hope it was borrowed because in a city of diverse culture that we have, it is not a good example of our education.
More importantly.. the video itself ASKED where some of them were educated and it was 'up north' if you will. or 'out east'
I think its not an east, west, north or south issue. I think its a public school thing, period. Each district can choose its own.
Texas is one of 9 states that does not follow the common core mandate however there is a district in San Antonio who chooses to do so anyway. Just one district out of all in our town.
I don't think this is common core as an issue either. I think we as parents NEED to be more invovled in our children's education.
It was a town outside of Atlanta GA. I only know this because my DH's cousin & her DH who is Jewish wanted to move there. They are teachers & where hired at a school but where told it was on the condition they did not talk about the Holocaust as they believed it did not happen.
Also I think its crazy that in VA they only teach VA history.

My former mother-in-law is a survivor of Auschwitz. She's still alive. She never really liked to talk about it. I've caught her during times where she's opened up to me and told me stories (usually during long car rides). She was 13 years-old when she lost her entire family except for one distant relative who now lives in Paris. My father-in-law, also a survivor, but now deceased never ever spoke about it. We do have photographs of them right after they were liberated. Very hard to look at them though.
My grandmother, before she had Alzheimer's, wouldn't speak about it ever. My grandfather thought it was extremely important for us to know their stories so he told us his and my grandmother's, and he recorded both of them so that we would have them forever. It must have been so hard for him but he answered every single question we ever asked. Now my poor grandmother relives it from time to time and it's absolutely horrifying to watch her go through it again
That's awful for your poor grandma.

Re: saw this on facebook about the holocaust
Thank you for posting this!! It really opens one's eyes to the level of ignorance... I didn't realize it was that bad!
The problem is, it is currently not at all fashionable to learn about Jewish history... This is something that almost seems to be be swept under the rug... Current political tides, especially in prominent educational institutions, tens to lean against anything Jewish and/or Israeli...
It is horrific that Holocaust is not a part of school curriculum. Nothing good can come of it! History tends to repeat itself, especially when one is not prepared to learn from it!

Who told you that in Virginia they only teach about the history of Virginia? I lived there from 1st-7th grade and learned way more than just the history of that state. In 4th grade social studies you mainly only learn about the history of VA but in 4th grade social studies in NY you mainly only learn about the history of NY. I majored in history in college at SUNY Stony Brook. I have always been obsessed with American History and a good chunk of what I learned regarding History and the start of my love for History began in the south. Maybe it was the area I lived in...Richmond, and not some backwoods town...But nothing was ever watered down, taken out of the curriculum because they didn't believe in it, etc etc. In fact, when we moved to Long Island I was a year ahead in social studies haven't already used the textbook in the prior year. I'm so tired of people saying...well it's because they are from so and so...etc. An entire region of the country isn't responsible for this. There are morons everywhere. Instead of stereotyping we need to come together to make much needed changes. Fight to change the curriculum in the schools not just for our kids but for the future...people need to know that these types of horrible atrocities occurred so that the innocent victims are remembered and so that something like this never ever happens again. Also, parents cannot solely depend on the schools to education our kids on this just like we can't solely hold them responsible for making our children polite, respectable members of society. Should it be taught, hell yes but we should also be teaching our kids this stuff at home and you don't need to be rich in order to do so. We were poor as shit and couldn't afford to play sports, join clubs, etc. We went to museums, tours, watched PBS documentaries by Ken Burns, and so on. These outings led to us asking lots of questions and my mom teaching us more. It's sad that more schools don't teach this but that is no excuse for kids not knowing this information.

Yes, it bugs me too.. i traveled as a military kid and afterwards.. EACH state seems to have this mentality. its crazy!
--- Also, parents cannot solely depend on the schools to education our kids on this just like we can't solely hold them responsible for making our children polite, respectable members of society. ---
THIS is sooooo true.. Ignorant parents breed ignorant children. Take racism as an example. But that said also the idea that any one section of the country is less than another is breeding its own form of hate. I have noticed we never say 'the north' here but I often heard the phrase 'the south' while in NY. No one in Iowa referred to either 'the north' or 'the south' at all and never heard it much in California either.
--- There are morons everywhere. Instead of stereotyping we need to come together to make much needed changes. ---
I agree!
We as a country need to stop excusing any form of ignorance as 'them' and 'that area'.. we are ALL Americans regardless of region!
As far as what we learn here (back in my old days) American/US History, then Texas History and World History.. all required all one year courses.
oh and I HATED history as a class.. loved the topic, hated the class. LOL barely passed it in HS. Still even *I* knew these questions (with the exception of the Night of Broken Glass and which US prez sent the jews back to europe)

I live in VA & have several friends with kids in school that have told me this.
As per the Virginia Dept of Edu website, they follow common core which are national standards, meaning they are doing the same thing that kids in NY are doing at the moment and according to a 2008 VA dept of edu page this was their social studies standards per grade
http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/history_socialscience/
Do your friends happen to have kids in the 4th grade because if so then yes, all they learn is VA history. Please get your facts right and do your own research before you go bashing a whole group of people.

This makes me so sad. I do remember learning about the Holocaust in World History, I'm positive of it and I went to public school. Either way, this makes me very sad.

Thought this would be a good place to post this. If anyone is around Tues night in the city, the Anne Frank center is having the premier of "The Pin":

I think all school kids everywhere should be made to watch these films.

I'm actually pretty surprised by this. I teach in a long island public high school. The majority of my 10th grade students have basic knowledge of the Holocaust. I teach Elie Wiesel's Night and we talk briefly about WWII before reading. Students definitely know which group was targeted during the Holocaust and can name Hitler as leader of Germany. Most of them are even accurate with the date. I am more surprised by the footage because I know the topic is still being taught in most long island public schools. Students are very sensitive to the material in Night (which is Elie's Wiesel's experience at Auschwitz and other camps as a teenager). They never complain about reading it and are moved by his experience.
if you saw it completely she said it was to target PA not NY.. and she names NY as one of 5 who mandate the topic for education and further specifically names long island pushed it through in 1994
I went to college in PA and Elie Wiesel spoke my freshman year of college. I won't ever forget it

Dh & I are friends with a Holocaust survivor who lives on LI....she is a Polish Catholic...most people don't realize there were 5 million "others" killed besides the 6 million Jewish people...she wrote a book with a Jewish survivor of the same age...and they share their experiences from each faith...speak at schools and other engagements including the Holocaust Museum in DC....I have driven her to some of her speaking engagements and its amazing to hear her story every time...even more amazing to watch people's reactions. She is making it her goal to educate people...
