Saying "I love you" to MIL
Do you tell your mother in law you love her? She used to say it to me, and I skirted around it bc I didn't want to say it back...I didn't love her at the time. But now I'm trying to move on...and I'll say "love you" sometimes to her...but she won't say it back. LOL...karma I suppose.

Nope, I have never told her that I loved her. I also don't call her "Mom" -- I call her by her first name.

My MIL is a sweetheart, and we'll sign emails, "Love, Heather" etc, and she'll say, love you guys, plural, but never directly to each other.

Re: Saying "I love you" to MIL
I use to, prior to being married. I started after we got engaged but may have even been before. I always felt like it was effort for her to say back... then I learned from her Mother that they never said that in the home. Grandma commented on it, because I always say it to her too and it made her happy. Sadly over the past year things have gone south so I no longer say it. I am thankful that her and my father-in-law created my husband, but I think to say "I love you" you should mean it and sadly right now I don't. I feel if I said it and didn't mean it things wouldn't get better and I want them to. So until they do I can't bring myself to say it... or call her Mom.

I do all the time and every phono convo. But DH was my HS sweetheart so I have known them for a VERY long time. I really look up to them - they have been a huge part of my life.

I'm very lucky and I have a great MIL and we have a wonderful relationship. Once we got engaged, I started calling her Mom and I say I Love You to her and FIL all the time.
It depends on your comfort level and relationship with your in-laws.

Re: Saying "I love you" to MIL
I do love my MIL but we don't say it. We have a great relationship and we are actually a lot alike, both a little shy, but we have this fun playful relationship and call each other name's and the whole family laughs but I don't know if it's just we get uncomfortable in those types of situations or what?

Only if she says it first. I always feel uncomfortable about it for some reason.

She says it to me, but very rarely do I say anythig back. It wasnt something that was commonly said in my house growing up so its weird for me to say it period to anyone other then DH. Plus shes done some AWEFUL things during and after the wedding, so I dont particularly care to say it anyway...

Ditto! Although, I don't call her "mom." Never did, not sure I ever will.
