Scared about the amnio

So the mfm and genetic counselor recommend the amnio to rule out any chromosomal issues / genetic issues as a cause of the heightened nt reading. I've been going back and forth but I feel that I need to do it for peace of mind. I'm still so scared though. The genetic counselor said in the 20 years she has worked with the practice they've never lost a baby, but I still worry. Can you talk to my about your experience with the procedure ?

Re: Scared about the amnio

I completely understand your feelings. I felt the same way when faced with the decision to do one..or not do one. I cried about it for days but DH and I both knew that it was the right thing to do, like you said..for peace of mind.

The procedure wasn't too long. (was almost an hr for me because I have twins). I won't lie, it was scary. But only because your mind is going to the worst place. Fear of the unknown is way worse than the actual procedure.

They do a sono to locate the sac and keep it there so they can see where the needle goes in and to make sure the baby is out of harms way. I had lower fluid in one babys sacs so they had to go deeper and press harder with the needle and it did hurt. I felt some cramping and almost like air pockets in my uterus. The other one was fine though. Prick of a needle, a little pressure and that was it.
The anxiety is what is worse. I had my eyes closed, my DH nearby and just breathed. That's all I focused on, my breathing.

Once the needle was out, they let me listen to the heartbeats to put my mind at ease.
It was a scary experience and not one that I wish to EVER have to go through again.
I have confidence that everything will be just fine. I too was told that there is a very high success rate with amnios and I felt comfortable with the Drs and techs that were there to do it.

Scared about the amnio

I had one. I know this will not make the lead up any easier but believe me the stress and fear of having it was the worst part.

They are very safe these days because it is sono guided. They will pick a pocket way far from the baby. IF they can't find one they will have you move around to get the baby to move....they will not in any way take a chance.

Take it easy for the 2 days after. The day of after the procedure I was tired (I think from the stress) and I just spent the day on the couch watching movies.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Yes!! Def. needed a few days to get back to my usual self. The stress from it all was bad. I had high blood pressure and my OB was concerned. I knew it was just from the anxiety of the amnio though and it went back down the following day.

Great advice!

Re: Scared about the amnio

I had one done

I am a HUGE baby and have severe medical anxiety to the point of phobia and to be honest, it wasn't bad at all.

The anxiety and stress leading up to it were much worse than the actual procedure.

I had it done at Madonna by a perinatologist. It is sono assisted so they see where the baby is and the needle was never near her. I watched on the screen.

In terms of pain, I thought a blood test hurt more. No joke. By the time I was able to flinch the needle was in and no pain. Just a pinch really. It only took a little while for him to get the fluid he needed adn then it was over. So quick.

I had it done on a Friday and stayed off my feet the rest of the weekend. It was nice to have DH wait on me! Chat Icon
I just really took it easy to be safe.

I felt a tiny bit sore in the area where the needle went in for about a day.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Good luck !

ETA- they told me that the rates of complications are even less with sono assisted amnios (which they all are now, and when done by a perinatologist).

Scared about the amnio

Wow, thanks so much for sharing your experiences. This is really helpful. I feel like no one in my life knows anything about this or can provide any real support. Very lonely feeling :( An Mfm will be doing it guided by ultrasound and I felt very comfortable with level of expertise, but still really nervous. How long did it take for you to get results back ? Did any of you do the microarray ?

When I was on the fence about doing the panorama test my OB told me that she had 3 elective amnios because, to her, the benefit of having that knowledge outweighed the potential risk. I thought that was interesting for her to share, and she has 3 healthy kids.

I got the results in 10 business days. I was not able to get the 48 hour prelim results without paying out of pocket.

Re: Scared about the amnio

I ended up not getting one after a heck of a scare...

BUT... my OB does them (he's high risk) and he said to me that in a good operator's hands, the risks are extremely low.

He's done many of them & he said the only ones where something happened was with very sick babies to start with.

How did your cardiac ultrasound go?

We didn't do a cardiac ultrasound because the baby is still too small. We did do an early 15 week anatomy scan which was completely normal.

I had one with my first (although it was towards the end of the pregnancy) but for me, the anticipation leading up to the procedure was much worse than the procedure itself. Good luck and many Chat Icon for good results!

Yes. That was the last result we were waiting for. The nurse literally JUST called me to tell me it's normal on both babies, thankfully.

Do you know what the Microarray tests for exactly? I asked the genetic counselor and she said she didn't want to tell me because she thought it would raise my anxiety level.

i had done my own research on it and from what in i understand its used to pick up more subtle genetic mutations making it more likely that abnormalities will be found. It's a step further than the karyotyping which just looks for chromosome irregularities. i don't know if that helps. Maybe someone else can better explain it.

Re: Scared about the amnio

I had it done and I was like 39 weeks at that point.

I saw the needle on the sono go right near the baby but it was fine.

They knew what they were doing the whole time.

The pinch is a little painful - NOTHING that bad. The needle being inside is a little uncomfortable. I get brazilian waxes so I compare everything to that -- it was NOWHERE near a wax!

And then it was over. She told me to rest for the remainder of the day.
