Scary story that thankfully has a happy ending

My niece (12 yrs old) was lying in bed on Monday afternoon talking on her cell phone. When my nephew (17yrs old who was in his room) hears her choking. He goes into her room and see’s she’s choking on something. He starts hitting her on her back till she’s able to breathe again. AND WHAT was she choking on??? A small little jingle bell she put in her mouth. BUT, she didn’t spit it out.

She told my sister she still felt it in her throat. My sister took her to the dr, but he couldn’t see anything. So he sent her for an X-RAY and sure enough, there is was stuck in her esophagus. Sister went back to the drs and he called an ambulance (he didn’t want her driving incase the bell moved and she wouldn’t know what to do) to get them to Stony Brook for surgery. Thank goodness, they didn’t have to cut her and were able to get it out by going down her throat and pulling it out. Ends up, the little loop at the top of the bell (where you can put stink through) got stuck on a piece of her skin!

You would think at 12 yrs old, they are out of the "don't put that in your mouth stage"!

Thank goodness my nephew was upstairs to hear her!

She needed to spend the night in the hospital for observation. The drs wanted to make sure their was no bleeding. But she's OK now.

I told my sister, my nephew deserves something for being on the ball. And not just brushing off his "annoying sister" as he calls herChat Icon

It is scary, but that's good it worked out.

I took a first aid course not long ago, and in that we were told anyone who chokes should go to the hospital afterwards. Sometimes most but not all of the thing comes up, or there is some tearing that needs to be checked out. I never would have thought to go if the choking item seemed to have come up.

Re: Scary story that thankfully has a happy ending

That is why I constantly tell my kids, 15, 12 and 9, not to put anything in their mouth. It makes me nervous. I know of a 13 who choked on a hot dog 2 years ago, in front of her family. They couldn't do anything for her. Very scary.
