Now that its snowing in most parts in suffolk.... How long till they start the school closings?

No I really do neenie... I just want a 'BIG' snow storm and I was just curious in how long they will start closing the schools, we have every other thread about snow, so i wanted to start a thread about when will they close the schools.

I just looked on the News Channel 12 website and there are closings and delays all over EXCEPT Long Island . Sorry everyone looks like its back to school tomorrow

It's still too early - on the 11pm Channel 12 news there will likely be delays posted, I doubt closings yet though. However, it looks pretty bad out so I am hopeful for that call tomorrow morning

Many districts on LI don't close the night before. They wait until morning to decide. Which is fun when you teach HS and get up at 5 am!

YES! And depending upon the district it is largely dependant on the bus companies. It's not always the supt. that makes the decision. The decision is usually made around 5 am.
For example, the larger districts and north shore districts often close first because there are so many more bus routes and the terrain (hills, etc.) can be more dangerous for the buses. Years ago (about 25 or so) there was a deadly accident up in Syosset. Half Hollow Hills also has a slick hill at the entrance to one of the high schools that the buses just can't make.
That's the same reason why the Catholic high schools close first. If one-third of their feeder districts/bus companies close then the school doesn't open.

It has nothing to do with the children living close enough to get to school safely or the teachers living far away. It has to do with the fact that the city schools are full to capacity (if no moreso). If the city schools close, then tens of thousands of children are home from school and parents, who work and do NOT have the day off (which is MOST parents) will have to lose a days pay to stay home and watch their kids. It is an issue of childcare and economics.

Can almost guarantee the Catholic HS my mom works at will be closed. They were closed on valentine's day AND the day after. I always say I wish I worked there.
