School crossing guards-Question
Are the crossing guards supposed to stop traffic (who have the right of way) to let a child cross (against traffic) at a stop light???
This happened today. It was crazy. On a main intersection! It was in front of a school. I drive past the school every day and there has never been a crossing guard.
I was like WTF. People slammed on their brakes. It was raining too. Maybe the person was new, but who f*cking doesn't know you wait until you have the green, then make the cars wait!

School crossing guards-Question
Isn't that their job? To stop traffic when a child needs to cross?
School zones are 20mph so it really shouldn't be a problem for people to stop when they see a crossing guard out with their stop sign. I've seen people FLY through our school zones, tailgating other cars, so I can see how this would be a problem if you aren't paying attention, or driving fast.

They walked the child across the street AGAINST TRAFFIC. The guard stopped the traffic who had a green light so the child could cross. The child did NOT have a green light. How is that safe?????
This wasn't a stop sign. This was a main intersection with a traffic light. Two busy streets.

Re: School crossing guards-Question
Crossing children is what they are supposed to do even if on coming traffic has a green light they are supposed to stop them and cross the children. I think a lot of schools have flashing yellow lights by them now to sort of warn drivers to slow down, and they are in school zone where the speed limit is reduced.

I agree that that’s totally unsafe to go against the light however as the PP said no one should be slamming on their breaks if they are going the school zone speed limit. My children go to school on northern blvd and the school zone speed limit is never enforced. It’s an accident waiting to happen no matter what. A kid could run across the street without the guard being able to stop them and get hit.

Re: School crossing guards-Question
No we have 2 crossing guards. One at the light and the other at the cross walk. The one at the light never stops cars who have the green. The cross walk one obviously has to stop cars but every one follows her rules. No way should they stop cars who have a green light. Way too dangerous

Yes and I think it is ridiculous. I cannot see any fathomable reason why a child cannot wait until the light is red to cross the street. It's completely unsafe and utterly absurd. It has nothing to do with flashing lights or school zone speed limits. You don't cross the street against traffic.

EXACTLY! I highly doubt crossing guards are taught to stop traffic who have a green light. You are always taught "wait for a green light to cross." Makes no sense.
And you will be slamming no your brakes if you are suddenly stopped in the middle of an intersection when a crossing guard walks in the middle of the road and stops you.. No matter how fast/slow you are going... and in the rain!

Yes, WE are taught that, but there are different rules for crossing guards. Like when police are in the middle of the street directing traffic in NYC. The crossing guard probably doesn't want the kids standing in the rain, so is trying to get them to school as soon as possible. Of course if you want to find out the true "laws" about it, I would contact your county, because that is who employs crossing guards.

School crossing guards-Question
Is there a button to push to get the light to change? By me the crossing guard pushes the button and waits for the light to change from what I've seen.
I dont cross where there's even a light and the crossing guard often makes me wait for a break in traffic to cross.

If that's the case that's even more ridiculous. I'd rather my kid get a little wet than get hit by a car.
I don't want anyone crossing my child against traffic. Ever. Not me, not a crossing guard, not God.

Eh, I don't see an issue with it at all. Like I said, school zones are 20mph, so it's not like cars are going 55mph and slamming on their brakes. I would complain to your school though if cars aren't stopping for the crossing guard. They will put a patrol car there, and they will get heavily ticketed!

Re: School crossing guards-Question
I kind of feel like though kids should be being taught from a young age the proper way to cross the street and that you never cross against traffic. In the real world there isn't someone who is going to walk out in the middle of traffic and stop it so you don't have to stand there an extra 30 seconds (or in the rain) waiting for the light to change. There is no reason to do it to go to school either. Teach them the proper way to cross the street, in the real world, from the beginning.

I’m just curious thou, did the light turn green and maybe she was still in the process of waving kids on to cross? Or did she just walk out into traffic mid green so kids could cross? I could see waving kids on if she was already in the middle of the street holding up the sign and the light had just changed. My kids don’t cross on the busy street but a lot of the kids from their school do. The street is so busy I would rather just drive them or let them take the bus but I do see a lot of kids crossing there and I always think crossing guard or not when people are driving the regular speed limit and not paying attention it’s hard to stop. In my opinion if you are going less than 20 miles an hour and paying attention someone would have to walk right in front of your car to cause you to slam on the breaks. Maybe come to a quick stop but 20 mph is prett slow.

School crossing guards-Question
Actually in Suffolk crossing guards are overseen by the police department, so maybe it's the same in other counties (it's a civil service position). So I would call the police department and ask the rules. But, our crossing guards do just come out in the street and put their sign up. It's up to the driver to pay attention and stop when directed to. Again, you shouldn't be going more than 20mph, so unless the guard is a few feet from your car, it's not a problem for most people to stop. Just like school buses, the stop sign is up, you stop, regardless if you are at an intersection, on a divided highway, if you have a green light, etc.
Also, I have seen people blow right by the crossing guard while she is standing in the road. That is SUCH a dangerous job due to inattentive drivers, and people who just don't give a crap and worry more about getting to work on time, than stopping for kids to cross the street.

School crossing guards-Question
One of my biggest pet peeves.... IMO, it isn't teaching the child the correct way of crossing the street. It's been done to me quite a few times and I just sit there shaking my head... it's a terrible accident waiting to happen, all you needed is that one distracted driver who saw a green light and nothing else.

School crossing guards-Question
I don't think it should be done and I wouldn't want my child crossing that way. I used to drive past a school crossing on my way to the train station. The crossing guard would push the button to change the light when she saw pedestrians approaching (so, almost as soon as the light turned green, lol) and she would push the button for cars wanting to make a left turn too. It took forever to get through the back up at that intersection in the morning, but that's how she did it.

Yeah totally inappropriate. Also teaches the kids a bad lesson.

Plus, if something happens, you're still responsible even if the crossing guard said it was ok.
There's a crossing guard by my in laws who apparently doesn't understand the meaning of a stop sign. She waves you on angrily if you don't blow the stop sign bc of her directions. It's super annoying

It has nothing to do with the speed limit. Children should not be taught to cross the street into oncoming traffic.

There’s a crossing guard like this at the Americana (Manhasset). I will always instinctively stop at a stop sign, crossing guard or not. When I do, he yells and waves his arms. I will never blow a stop sign bc a man in a yellow vest is telling me to.
