School Issues
My super smart 6 year old is starting 1st grade next week. Since her brother told her that school is starting soon, she's been keeping us up at night saying that's she's scared about starting school. I know it isn't the work she's afraid of.......because frankly she's just so smart, I know just like last year, she'll be given extra work to keep her busy. I just don't what to do to ease her mind and get her to sleep peacefully. Any suggestions?

Re: School Issues
This is one of my fears! My son is going into 2nd grade, so far he hasn't mentioned any fears. All I could say is just to reassure her, explain that 1st grade is sooooo similar to kindergarten, she might even have some of the same kids in her class!

Re: School Issues
I tried reassuring her and even telling her that she's going to see sone of her friends but nothing at this point seems to work. The sheer mention of the word school send her into a crying fit. I know she loved kindergarten. She was actually the teachers' helper, helping some of the not so advanced kids. She was helping with their writing and reading. She actually said when I grow up I want to be just like mrs.____. Of course she also wants to be a veternarian. so who knows. I just need to sleep. I work and it's hard having to stay up at night. I'm sure it will pass.........all phases do..........but when?

Re: School Issues
Has she said what it is that is making her scared? Maybe she is nervous about leaving home again- the few months of summer must seem like eternity to a little girl....maybe it's just the adjustment of being away from mommy all day again....

Re: School Issues
She says she wants to learn and wants to be with the kids, but doesn't want to go to school. Yes, I am sure that part of it has to do with leaving me, but I work full time........and leave her everyday.......but you are right, maybe the summer was tooo long for her to be away.
Let's keep our fingers crossed I get some sleep tonight. She can take a nap at her grandmother's house.............I don't have that luxury at work. Can you imagine? in my office?

Re: School Issues
I teach second grade and at our school some parents bring their child up to see me before school begins. They meet me setting up my classroom. I know some parents feel bad "bothering" me before school starts, but I totally understand why they do it. Maybe it might make her get excited about first grade if she goes to her new classroom before school begins.
