Re: school lunch - bring? or buy?
Well, I feel like school food is historically gross. My DD is entering first and she is going to bring. But if she comes home and tells me that she likes how the food looks I will let her buy.

I asked him and he wants to bring...but I think I'm gonna do what you are...see if buying becomes tempting.

Re: school lunch - bring? or buy?
My DS is going into 2nd grade. We started kindergarten with him bringing. The last few months f school he was interested in buying, so we did a mix of both. But for some reason, he had no interest in buying lunch in 1st grade. He brought it in every day. I would start by sending from home and then let them decide.

My son is going to Kindergarten and I will be buying lunch. He used to eat the lunches at his daycare, so hopefully it will be the same.
My son is also a beast. LOL

My DD is going into Kindergarten. We will start out bringing for the first few weeks. If she wants to buy once in a while she can, I guess we'll take a look at the menu.

My kid is also fussy- which is also why I'd prefer for her to bring. I think going from half day k to full day 1 will be enough of a change without her being hungry, and she is stubborn enough to not eat if she doesn't like what they're serving.

Re: school lunch - bring? or buy?
I would bring the first week. From my experience pizza Fridays was a must to buy very popular day to buy. For DS it was pretty much 50/50. We always took a look what they had a day before also your safe with the daily pb&j, buttered or cream cheese bagel and yogurt if you Dc likes any of those. I don't have him buy the pasta, taco and soups. It's usually the brunch meal, turkey wrap, turkey dog, chicken nuggets, pizza and cheeseburger.

My DS buys everyday. Rarely will he ask to bring. He doesn't always get the hot meals but instead gets the alternative. It's always some kind of sandwhich.

Re: school lunch - bring? or buy?
I make their lunches daily. They are allowed to buy once a week, because the meals start at $4.50 at their school and I am not super rich to support that as a daily habit.
We look at the lunch menu each week and they decide which day they want to buy.

As a school custodian for many years I can vouch your child will not be poisoned but lunches basically are pizza, hot pockets and chicken nuggets in various shapes and sizes. I also can assure that much of what you pack your child will be thrown out. Yes. Kids spend more time chatting than eating and with two minutes left all uneaten food gets tossed or put back in lunch bag. If any of you think your kids are eating those yogurts your packing you're sooo wrong. 99% of all yogurts,go go gurts etc get tossed.

school lunch - bring? or buy?
When DS was in K I sent in lunch every day. About mid year he started asking to buy but I continued to send it in. One day I got a note from his teacher telling me that DS really wanted to try the school lunch and if there wasn't a dietary concern could he just once try it . Apparent,y he was asking her about it everyday! So of course I let him buy now and then. Move to 1st grade, he never wanted to buy because the long was too long and he would miss recess time!

I remember how much I'd toss of what my mom made me.
When DD was in K she brought home whatever she didn't eat of her snack. At first I was annoyed but then I realized that the teacher wanted us to see what was eaten and not eaten. I would actually be glad if that policy held for grade 1 but I doubt it. I want to know what she eats and doesn't eat.

Re: school lunch - bring? or buy?
last year, we let DD pick a day to buy once a week. That increased on days that Daddy forgot to make lunch
But will probably have the same rules this year

Re: school lunch - bring? or buy?
I pack a lunch 2 or 3 times a week. It is usually dictated by whether or not I make it the night before or have time in the morning. Like others say there are some days that they want to buy lunch.

SD refuses to bring lunch. So she buys. I'm not sure how much she's eating either way, honestly. Lunch isn't her big meail.

Oh yes, that's another thing. Waiting in line to buy lunch takes a lot of time! Especially on pizza days at our school. I know a lot of schools only get 20 minutes to eat lunch, so that's really pushing it. Our kids get 55 minutes between lunch and recess, so I'm guessing 30 for lunch.

Re: school lunch - bring? or buy?
I always heard kindergarteners shouldn't buy lunch because they become too overwhelmed with the money etc. I find it is expensive for the stuff you get so I will be sending in lunch and if he asks, he can buy 1 x a week!

Re: school lunch - bring? or buy?
My kids like to buy but I did find in elementary that if it is a popular food day (i.e. pizza) they say that the line is so long that they barely have time to eat and end up throwing a good amount out. I am sure it depends on the school and the lunch room but this has been my experience. Aside from that I love having the option of letting them buy. Hopefully your school has the online money depositing system (my nutrikids or something like that). It lets you see their balance, what they bought, and add money automatically when funds are getting low.

Re: school lunch - bring? or buy?
It varies and my girls go through phases. They mostly buy. NYC schools are quite progressive as far as nutritional standards so that's one reason I let my girls buy lunch. The other is convenience. If I was sending lunch from home they would want white bread and white pasta I like how the city only provides whole wheat. Also I would be sending in the same things everyday, I like that they are exposed to different things.
My DDs are going into 3rd and 5tg grade so I have BTDT as far as packing lunches.

Re: school lunch - bring? or buy?
DD brought her lunch at first, but as the year went on she started buying. We looked at the lunch calendar together and circled the lunches she wanted to buy. She mostly bought pizza and brunch for lunch.
