School placement-----
My son currently goes to a school in our district that isn't our home school... We have a bunch of elementary schools. He is in a special ed placement in this school. He likes it there and they are talking about mainstreaming him in september. He found out he would be going to a different school and freaked out. He made really good friends at his current school and with his special needs, it is almost cruel to move him out. Has anyone sent there kid to a different school in their school district? I am looking at all my options...

Yes. We were moving but within district and I asked that questions specifically. DD was in a self contained until this year (2nd grade) and now is fully mainstreamed. There "official" answer is that once you mainstream you have to go back to your own school but if you can show that it is beneficial for your son to stay where he is, they will let him (at least in my district) I basically said with her anxiety if they moved her the entire year would be lost for her and that it is almost abuse to put her through that if not necessary. Luckily I did find a house that was the home school for special ed so I didn't have an issue but regardless, she would not have moved schools. The only issue is transportation. If he is not going to be on a minibus anymore you will have to provide him transportation to and from school. They will not send a bus for him.

Thank you.... I bus him now as he is too afraid to go on the bus.. If they are to move him, he will regress and the anxiety will seriously hurt him. He doesn't transition easily. It will definitely be bad if he has to move. With the loss of his father last year and a lot of other issues, he is (and always has been) very sensitive. He is only in K and I am "fighting" right now to keep him in special ed. He has autism and adhd.

I think it is ridiculous to expect a child to go through an entire school year, make new friends, get comfortable at the school, etc. and then, simply because they might not need the special ed class anymore, they are expected to uproot themselves and start all over at a new school because that is where they are zoned.
It should be a rule that if a child needs to attend another school in the district that is not their home school due to needing a special needs class, they should be allowed to stay at that school even in the event that they are mainstreamed.

I agree. However, after years of working in special ed.. it's not always about what is best for the child. Let that sink it. It's about money. You are going to have to advocate like heck for your kid. Good luck. I hope you win.

Yup, this exactly!! When my son was in a different district than we are in now, he was in a self contained class in his home school. A few years in they decided they would move all of the self contained kids to another school (not home school), for ONE year, then move them back. Something about test scores and a reflection on the school. I was beyond pissed. We moved that year.
Another friend had twins. One special ed, one not. They wanted to put him in a class, but not in his home school. She asked if typical functioning twin could attend the same school. They refused after a lot of fighting. So she would have twins in two different schools. She ultimately had to pull him from special ed and mainstream him with many supports. It was so ridiculous. Same district, just different schools!

I know it is all about the money... Which SUCKS!!!! I just got a date for a 2nd meeting as the first one was a disaster... He will hopefully get what he needs and what is in his best interest...
What pi$$es me off, is that his school has kids from Suffolk County and other school districts in Nassau... With the amount WE pay in school taxes, I shouldn't be having this problem.. I have an advocate and I can't wait until next week to see what is going to happen..... If he gets to stay in special ed, it gives me another year to figure out what I am going to do when they do mainstream him.... I will be writing letters to the school district to see if I can get him to stay in the school.
